    Freecycle for turners resources.

I had a look on the national site and it says that borrowing is not allowed. I don't know if those running regional groups are allowed to choose which rules they follow. I guess in the end it just comes down to how strict the admins are. We have a Freecycle Cafe group up here where borrowing is...

    Freecycle for turners resources.

Pete - I've just received a Freecycle reminder email and the first 2 items in the list are... 1. No swaps, bartering, borrowing, sales or trading 2. No offers/requests of payment, postage or delivery charges I'm not sure whether the rule of no borrowing makes sense or not - if the aim of the...

    Freecycle for turners resources.

Congratulations on your find. I should point out, though, that she broke the primary Freecycle rule - everything has to be free, hence the name! I've got the occasional log from Freecycle but that's about it when it comes to turning. I did get a car battery charger though, for de-rusting tools.

    Snow and woodworking

I remember seeing a documentary following a team trying to cross the Bering straight in a vehicle using this propulsion system. The BBC report is here and the team's website is here

    Inspiration?

If forgot another area of inspiration - I'm lucky enough to live in a city with some decent art galleries and museums. My favourite gallery regularly has a lot of ceramic, glass and bronze work and I often get ideas when walking round. It's also a good place to visit as they always have wood...

    Tangent to a Circle?

I've just asked a maths teacher friend and he said around 14/15 in both England and Scotland, although it depends on ability.

    Inspiration?

I tend to go for quite basic forms with simple, flowing curves. Inspirations include John Hunnex's books, Marks Baker's books (particularly 'Woodturning Projects: A Source Book Of Shapes') and most of the projects by Tracey Owen in Woodturning magazine I recently bought the excellent book The...

    Turning Time in 2009

Lovely vase Chas. Nice and simple design that shows off lovely grain

    More recent turnings (by Duncan)

Thanks again... A lot of patience:) The tools I tend to hollow with are the Munro tool with the original links and some extra ones I made to bolt on and get more reach. To get right into the corner I use a variety of cutters according to what works best on the day - short pieces of sharpened...

    More recent turnings (by Duncan)

Thanks Chas. No glue needed at all on the bark. There are some worm holes just under the bark and these add a little interest. Hopefully there are no worms left in there!

Guys,.. would this idea have any legs in it ... ? ?

Not a bad idea. My club has an annual competition - anything goes, and the last one was on Friday. Any member who is there on the night gets to vote so the preferences/ego/grudges of a single judge don't come into play! Each member has 2 votes (worth 1 and 2 points) and these are anonymous...

    Reciprocating saws

Most of my trimming is done with the bandsaw. If I have a piece that's particularly out of balance that won't go on the bandsaw (like a small log or burr) then I sometimes use an electric planer. It's loud and messy but it does the job!

    Chainsaw electric or petrol?

I have a Bosch electric from B&Q that I use once a month or so. I went with electric as I only plan on cutting in my garden and I don't want to annoy my neighbours. It's also cleaner to set up and run. I have safety helmet, boots, gloves and chaps and always wear them but read on another forum...

    More recent turnings (by Duncan)

A big thank you to everyone who commented. Pete - If I hadn't turned the walls as thin of as uniform then I'm sure this would have split. Once it was turned I left it unfinished sitting in the shed for a week before bringing it indoors. Pretty much all the movement happened whilst it was still...

    More recent turnings (by Duncan)

I thought I'd post something that shows just how much wood can warp when drying. 13.5cm bark-to-bark, 2mm wall thickness This is made from the trunk of a smallish American Red Oak which I helped cut down whilst clearing non-native trees from a wildlife trust site. It was turned wet and I...

    bog yew vase (boysie39)

Thanks for the series of photos showing the steps involved. I like the end result I noticed your comment about the final finish being satin, and I agree that this would improve the look. I look forward to seeing the final finish Duncan

    Sheds and lathes? *updated*

My shed floor is tongue and grooved (but don't know what thickness as I didn't make it). On top of that I have 5cmx5cm lengths of wood running crossways with rockwool slabs between. Then a layer of chipboard. The lathe (NovaDVR placed lengthways in the shed) sits on a sheet of 2cm (I think) MDF...

    Walking Poles

I use the vertical part of the handle for most situations but find the horizontal part particularly helpful when going down steeper slopes, crossing boulder fields and crossing streams/rivers - situations where I use the stick to take more weight than it normally would when used just for walking

How deep is your snow ?

I'm feeling so left out up here in Newcastle We had about 4cm on Monday which lasted until the afternoon when it started to rain. Nothing since then except about 5mm this morning

    Walking Poles

I've used Lekis for hill walking for years. The original one I got in '92 is still going strong despite loosing all it's paint. In Scotland one year I slipped and it bent under my weight (saved me from a huge fall though). When i got back they replaced the bent part for free :D One of them...
