    tree lumber identification

I would say definitely Aspen. The diamond markings on the bark are what gives it away. If it was alder then the timber oxidises very quickly and on fresh cuts, in a matter of minutes it would usually (probably always, but I've not cut them all down so can't be 100% sure) turn orange with hints...

Required output for a light for turning?

I have 2 basic angle poise lamps from Ikea, one at each end of the bed. I've had them for years and they still work well, though I've had to replace a few nuts and bolts which fell out (lock nuts now used). They're not the strongest construction, but they're cheap and have lasted. Just choose a...

    Danish Oil - Harrogate.

Rustins will be there and their Danish Oil is great - tested for food contact and toys (can't remember the BS standard number)

    Turning chisels

I started with that set. It's ok but the bowl gouge is not a bowl gouge, despite what they might claim. It's more like a long spindle gouge - the flute is too shallow for a bowl gouge and the wings are too short. When you get to the stage of wanting to grind them back for a swept profile you...

Finishing larger bowls turned with headstock rotated

I use a vacuum chuck. I also have a homemade donut chuck but I can't remember the last time I used it.

    Best ebony stain?

There's also the IUCN list of threatened species http://www.iucnredlist.org/search, which lists several ebonies as vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/33048/0 comes from West Africa. Unfortunately, most of the data seems to come from 1998. African...

    Best ebony stain?

I think most ebony species are listed under CITES as threatened or vulnerable. And after a report on the news last year, I wouldn't even trust anything which supposedly comes with a CITES license. I don't think blackwood is currently listed under CITES but apparently it's been considered for...

    This was a bargain !

It won't show up on the regular search as it's a completed item. You need to tick the box for completed listings on the LHS. Note that they got the model wrong - the NovaDVR xp 1644 doesn't exist. It has 1624 on it so presumably that's what it is, although it may have had some sort of upgrade...

    Pro Edge questions

I've never quite understood why Toolpost list prices without VAT, other than to catch people out. The website could do with some serious redesign as well, but it's been that way for years and I can't see it changing any time soon. Yes, I'd seen the posts about BND

    Pro Edge questions

Has anyone tried the cheaper belts available at Toolpost (see the bottom of the page) ? Also, which belts to people tend to use for HSS turning tools? Is anyone using the ProEdge with large bowl gouges? My 3/4" bowl gouges don't seem to work particularly well in the jig - the brass cap needs...

Peter Child pyrography machine any good ?

Better late than never... Here's a photo of the pyrography tool I made to use with my Peter Childs unit. The wood is a random piece of ash which is drilled along its length - 12mm I think, but only needs to be enough to take the bits inside. The are 2 lengths of brass (I think) brazing rods...

Locking 6" faceplate m33x3.5; buy or make

Depends on the lathe - on the Nova and Wivamac there's a short section of the spindle that's not threaded. Can't comment on any others

Locking 6" faceplate m33x3.5; buy or make

I'm pretty sure my Toolpost faceplates have a single grub screw. I can check this evening

Pull cut technique, and bouncing off a knot

The problem with glue-ups like this is that you need to be careful to get the grain orientation consistent so that it reacts like a normal bowl blank would do. If you get one or more of the pieces backwards then some sections will get tear out whilst others won't. Also, the glue is likely to be...

cutting a recess into a chopping board fro a 5.5 ramkin

If you have access to a lathe then you can cut the whole recess fairly easily (assuming you have enough clearance and know what you're doing). Either hold the wood using a vacuum, donut or longworth.

Did they inform you of their fees when you spoke to them? If not then you can't have agreed to them.

    Bri's experience so far :-)

You might want to check out Northumbrian Woodturners for a local club - http://www.northumbrianwoodturners.com/ We meet every 2nd Friday of the month and every other month there's also a demo on the Saturday. I seem to remember that there was an article in the Woodturner magazine maybe 8 years...
