    Munro tool cutter

I assume you're referring to £21 tool at Axminster. Which one? When I bought my munro tool the price wasn't as high as it is now and it was also at a show discount. Yes, you can hollow for a cheaper price especially if you can make toothpick hollowers. However, I prefer the munro to all other...

    My first bowl

Nice bowl, and a very good first effort considering your lack of tools. You've avoided the mistake that I feel beginners often make - you've produce a nice, curved bowl that doesn't try to make the most out of the size of the blank (ie'. vertical sides and flat bottom just because they don't...

Using a router on a wood lathe.

I built a holder for my router so that it's lying parallel to the lathe bed. In theory this lets me use it on faceplate and spindle work but so far I've only used it on a bowl's face. It's basically a large, wide L shape with a hole in the vertical for the tool to go through. Threaded holes in...

    Munro tool cutter

I've watched one of Magma lathe videos of Rolly Munro using his tool. He starts with the old version, which is the one I have, and then switches to one with the current design. This looks much better as it appears to be symmetrical and can cut in both directions. It also looks to be smaller, so...

    What Power Carver

It depends how much out of balance it is and what I'm turning. My lathe (DVR on metal legs) isn't bolted down and sometimes I can only turn the speed up to 300rpm before it starts to shake. Turning down to 250 stops it and I could turn at that speed to remove the uneven weight. However, if the...

    What Power Carver

I have the standard Arbortech and have recently been finding it very useful for balancing up blanks once mounted on the lathe. I've also used it for some of those Terry Scott winged shapes. One problem I had was that the guard had a tendency to rotate slightly once fitted. Fixed this by padding...

    Favour needed in Northumberland

You might want to contact Lightweeder, as she lives in Prudhoe I live in Newcastle so could help, but I'm away at the moment Duncan

    Chisels

I agree that the bowl gouge in the Perform set us useless as a bowl gouge as the flute is not really deep enough. Mine's ground for spindle work but I rarely use it. The spindle gouge is passable. I'd say avoid. In general most people suggest not buying a beginners set, and that it's best to...

    Lathe Control Box layout

When I build the remote box for my DVR I used a layout with the start button on the side so it doesn't get accidentally pressed by either me or something falling against it. The stop is larger and the up and down buttons are obvious. I hardly ever use reverse so that's left on the original...

    two new spalted beech forms

That second one is fantastic. It looks really tactile. Did you choose to texture and carve it because the wood was too soft to get a decent finish or was it you intention from the start?

Occasionally I make an occasional table

Lovely timber and it looks like you're got an excellent finish on it. Comments - I think it might have looked a little more substantial (reassuringly so if I was going to put things on it) if the leg had flared out an the top to give the impression of more support. Possible the same at the...

Should you stick with same brand of tools?

I don't think the brand makes much difference, as long as you get HSS. It can actually help to go for a mix of brands as that way you have a mix of handle shapes and colours and that's useful for identifying tools quickly. In my tool rack I have bowl tools and spindle tools separate. If I want...

    Unintentional upgrade...

Really sorry to hear that Bob. No doubt you got the same sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when it went wrong. At least you're not alone. Did it happen the same way - were you cleaning out the sensor? I think it's a bit of a design flaw to have a lathe which is susceptible to dust in...

    More turnings from Duncan

Thanks Santos. The texture isn't an original idea to me. I've seen it used in several places but I can't remember who by

    More turnings from Duncan

Here are some more. All pyrographed whilst camping for a week in a lovely field in Suffolk in May. 19cm x 15cm The close up shows the alternating burns I made. I used a coil of wire in the pyrography tool and applied it edge on like a brand. Once it was all burnt I lightly sanded and this...

Dent in flying bowl - can I get it out?

I've done this several times using a damp tissue and a pyrography tool set on max heat setting. It works well but can take several applications. If it's a deeper indent I apply a little water before hand as suggested.

    tailstock drill problems

I've found that bullet tip bits are excellent for cutting straight. They're made by Black and Decker (possibly others as well) and called Piranha. I used to see them in B&Q but they haven't had them the last few times I've been in. The last ones I bought of Amazon (I think)

    Yew Platters

Nice looking work Johnny. I like the reverse of the first yew and really like the mix of heart and sap on the second one. I think shorter wings might work better on the laburnum one, but nicely done. What size is it? It must have quite a noise with those wings! Any chance of a side view of the...

    More turnings from Duncan

Phil - having looked through this thread again, most of the turnings are from wet wood, either freshly fallen or fallen within 12 months and left in log form with sealed ends. Some were turned from dry blanks and the flatter, regular shapes were definitely from dry blanks. I do very little...

    More turnings from Duncan

JT- I was thinking more about seed pods and flowers, but you're not the first person to mention birds. I've played with the idea before:- these were my first efforts and this was my first box:- Both from 2006. Just shows how slow I am at working through my ideas!
