    Jet or Wivamac

Not a huge problem for now, but thanks.

    Jet or Wivamac

Unfortunately I'm limited on space so there aren't many places the box can go. The magnetic control box it came with is good enough for me as it has a long enough cable to place pretty much anywhere on the lathe. How did you wire up your emergency stop?

    Jet or Wivamac

I've remembered one annoyance with the Wivamac - the box with the inverter takes up a lot of space under the lathe where I previously had a waste bin. I guess it could be mounted somewhere else but I've just never got round to it

    Jet or Wivamac

Last year I bought a Wivamac 6000. A Jet lathe wasn't even an option in my considerations as I don't have the space to take the headstock to the end and turn large stuff. The rotating head stock on the Wivamac is why I bought it. Having to use a spanner to move the headstock is a very minor...

    Another what wood?

No idea what the wood is, but I thought I'd point out that yew has extremely tasty fruit. Just eat the flesh and not the seed. They look kind of exotic!

    Laburnum

All wood dust can cause problems so I'd say treat it exactly as you would any other turning timber - wear a mask and use dust extraction.

    DIY Tool Rests

I've been using the Sorby modular rests on and off for 10 years and never had one loosen on me. I don't use them every day but they get regular use when I'm making short spindle projects. I like them a lot although I rarely use the curved ones which I bought. The stem is also useful as a side...

    Drilling high speed steel

In the past I've successfully used carbide bits intended to drilling ceramic tiles. Our club's engineer also drilled some for my using a solid carbide drill bit, although I managed to find some incredibly hard HSS planar blades which dulled them. In the end I had most success using an extra thin...

how to avoid cherry from splitting ?

More split cherry. Cut down in summer I autumn I think, and then sat in the garden for a few months at least. Still wet when turned (slowly - it's 37cm across and was damn heavy!). Cherry crotch by duncanhoyle, on Flickr

    Making hollowing tools

No confusion at all. With a round bar you can control how aggressive a cut you take, whether it be roughing/boring or shear cutting/scraping. A lot of my hollowing is done from start to finish with the Munro tool (because I can take large cuts for roughing and tiny cuts for finishing) but I also...

    Making hollowing tools

I still don't see the need for hex or square bar. Round is much more controllable for getting a better finish. Almost every hollowing tool on the market is round.

how to avoid cherry from splitting ?

How about part turning them and then drying them (covering end grain with PVA etc) before returning - blanks will dry much faster. I've never tried this with cherry but if you're getting splits anyway it's always worth trying. Or better still, wet turn to 5mm or so and allow to warp as they dry...

    Banana Bowl demo

He called it a rubber chucky. They were reviewed in the Woodturning magazine a while back http://www.rubberchucky.com/ No idea if you can get them over here. I'd just make a dome of wood and put mouse mat/router mat over it when you use it. These days I use a vacuum chuck

    Commonwealth Games quaich

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the turned wooden quaichs that are being presented to medal winners at the commonwealth games. There's a video about them, the medals and the holders on the quaich maker's website - http://www.paulhodgkissdesigns.co.uk/ An image from another website

    My feet stink!

I find that wearing any footwear without socks makes both the feet and the footwear smell before too long. Try socks with merino wool in them or viscose made from bamboo - they both have anti bacterial properties and cut down on foot odour considerably. That's all I wear when I go hiking now...

    Music in the kitchen?

It's fairly easy to make a carrot whistle/ocarina including carving the mouth part from just a single carrot using a single twist drill bit and a knife. I've never tried a sliding whistle but found this video http://vimeo.com/23924913 Having learned to make one from a carrot I've since made a...

    Gavel

A very nice first gavel. The only thing I would change is the orientation of the wedge - not aligned with the length of the head. Sorry, but it's the first thing I noticed.

    Northumbrian Woodturners

Me, although I don't go to every meeting or post much here any more. They have a new facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Northumbrianwo ... rs?fref=ts There's work on a new website but for now the old can is at http://www.northumbrianwoodturners.com/ There's also a small club in Blyth...

    Making hollowing tools

Every tool I've made has been round bar except one which was square. I always use the round ones for hollowing. They give me far more control and allow me to rotate the bar and ease into the cut. More often than not I will rotate the tool during use to ensure the most efficient cut. The square...

Turning plywood. A couple of queries

Have you ever come across aviation plywood? Impressive stuff, with 2 plys per mm and no voids. I used to use it for making boomerangs but it's expensive and the best place I could find for it was a mail order company in Germany
