marking gauge, should the blade turn?

It was purely an academic question. I'd like to understand why a fixed blade would work better.

marking gauge, should the blade turn?

They may well not be designed to turn. I'd like to understand why, why it was designed NOT to turn. If it works I'll use it, it was an academic question. You still haven't explained why you think a sharp wheel that turns doesn't cut.

Buying a machine on eBay sight unseen with pallet delivery

It's quite possible the terms and conditions have changed but eBay policy was that once you have bid you have entered into a contract and that to me is perfectly reasonable. If your not sure about what you are buying don't bid. Ask before you bid, if you receive no reply then it's your choice...

    New Rule

I had exactly the same issue with a Veritas straight edge. It took months to get my money back. They lost most of my business.

Black and White property paint choice

I would research a bit more but I think linseed oil paint is a possibility, although it might be a waste of time if someone has already used a modern "plastic" film type paint. I get mine here There is also information on painting half-timbered houses, but I'm not sure if it is relevant to the...

marking gauge, should the blade turn?

I dont understand why you think it wouldn't cut if it turns? It's a circle, 360 degree sharp. It may cut differently to a stationary wheel, but it will cut. Does a pizza cutter not turn? Does it cut?

marking gauge, should the blade turn?

Whilst I understand what you are saying, I would be very surprised if this were the only reason a wheel was used rather than a blade, like a Japanese marking gauge. But a wheel is far easier to sharpen or replace.

marking gauge, should the blade turn?

I would have thought it should turn, otherwise what is the point of it being a wheel?

marking gauge, should the blade turn?

I bought a Veritas marking gauge many years ago but to be honest I have never used it preferring the Japanese type. Should the blade rotate? Pulling the gauge towards you tightens the screw so my blade is always clamped firmly still. Am I missing something?

    Drill Bit Advice

Bosch do a couple of types of HSS which can be found reasonably priced on Amazon. I think the brand/quality is important if you want them to last and work well.

    Shapton stone flatness

It's OK. My finest stone is a King 6000. I paid less than £20 20 years ago. I hate sharpening. All I want is a "magic" stone that allows me to flatten the back of a chisel or plane iron when I don't look after it and end up with dendritic rust marking, preferably in less than 5 minutes.

    Shapton stone flatness

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that HS is heavily involved in making the Nanohone stones, I don't think he is just re-boxing them. I have no preference, Nano hone was suggested, it was available in Germany at a reasonable cost compared to other Japanese stones, so I tried it. I do not have...

    Shapton stone flatness

I bought a Nanohone stone, their strapline is "our world is flat", I think it's even written on the box. I could get a 0.1mm feeler gauge under a straight edge.
