    100mm Starrett double square

Looking for the 4"/100mm. It's amazing how much time I spend looking for stuff. I finally bit the bullet and ordered it from the UK as I'd been looking for some time. I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. When I lived in Ireland it was cheaper for me to fly to Italy and buy a...

    Dovetail chisel

I'm considering buying a small, 6mm, dovetail chisel. I still have my first chisels, a set of Marples splitproof but all my other chisels are Japanese apart from one which is LN. The Japanese in my experience hold an edge much longer, but getting one with the current Covid restrictions at...

    Birch ply alternative?

Poplar ply very popular here in Italy. Fewer layers though.

FTAGH Spares / repairs - record 52.5 vice

I've never had a woodworking vice, I'd bite your arm off for it, unfortunately I'm in Italy. I love old tools, I'm currently restoring a cast iron bandsaw.

    Thanks that looks about right.

    White pine in the USA

It didn't look like hemlock. I ca buy hemlock here in Italy, I bought it once, I didn't find it very nice to work with.

    White pine in the USA

Can anyone tell me what species or group of species that cover the term white pine in the US? The person that mentioned it was in New England I think.

    Woodcraft blades

Does anyone have experience of Woodcraft blades? They seem significantly more expensive than the European brands, are they worth the extra.

    Random machinery restoration questions (ongoing)

I stick with the old BSW.

    100mm Starrett double square

I know, I should have said EU, not Europe. It's just too difficult/expensive to buy from the UK. Not just that many suppliers no longer want to send to Europe, but sometimes just Italy, the costs at this end for courier handling charges from the UK make it daft. 18 euro or £15 just to work out...

    100mm Starrett double square

Can anyone in Europe suggest where I might find one? Dieter Schmidt sells them but he is out of stock until week 22.

    Storage Crates

My workshop is in a semi basement with stone walls. No mortar, just earth between the stones. No heating. I have a lot of them and have had no issues with them going brittle. You can often find them reducedin Amazon Wharehouse, the prices regularly change by 25%.

    Storage Crates

Mine are in a cellar and no issues with lids.

    Woodworm!

It's also used for dry rot.

    Woodworm!

I wonder if they use probore because it is supposed to be less toxic or because it is more effective?

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

Splitter similar to this. I don't have a tractor, so not mine, but locally wood is the fuel of choice. I split the shorter stuff by hand but 70-75cm is just to slow.

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

I think that probably depends on the timber and the size. It would take me forever to split a 75cm long log for my boiler, a splitter does it in a few seconds. That's a proper splitter on the back of a tractor.

Help please - "tool" gone "all sticky" outside

I think it can be removed, had same problem with early hero gopro camera. I'm not at home, my 13 year old uses it now, but I think we did find a solution online. I wouldnt try anything like acetone, too agressive, it will more than likely dissolve the plastic below. Ethyl, methyl or isoprpyl...

    Dodged a bullet———almost

Far less exciting, but I heat a fairly large house with logs, 75ish cm long and up to 20, even 25 cm diameter. Mostly chestnut but some oak and cherry. I cut and burn probably 10-15 tons a year in a 60kw boiler. I am always amazed at the number and size of stones and pebbles I find in the ash.

    Something for the weekend.....

You may live to regret that! I've met a lady who lives in or near Cortemilia, drives a Freelander I think.
