    hearing

My very fussy aunt bought expensive Amplifon, her expectations were far too high and she was never happy with them. The technician was with her quit literally every week to tweak them. So don't expect perfect hearing in all situations. My mum had relatively expensive Amplifon, she has had...

Single most useful tool in your shop

I've had a Fein since the 90's, it may be multifunctional but I doubt I have used it more than 5 times.

20MM Router Bit for routing MFT holes

Whatever bit you use try the woodpecker method, should be better than trying to plunge in one go. I used a Wealden hinge boring bit and there was no burning.

    Insulating Lime Hemp Plaster

In Italy, you can buy premixed insulating hydraulic lime plaster. I used it around all the windows I made and installed to avoid condensation problems. It isn't hemp but it works and has approval in Italy. I have plastered in and out, approximately 1200m2 in hydraulic lime plaster. In Ireland...

    Walnut tree

I had 2 or 3 small walnut trees converted in 1996. I still haven’t used them. Lovely grain.

Is there a reason for using dovetails at the end of the bench with a tail or wagon vise?

Gluing - how long to leave clamped

4C sounds a bit cold to me. The joints may still appear stuck but they may fail. In winter I use urea/formaldehyde glue as it is far less vulnerable to the cold but I still wouldn't use it under 10C.

    Rust Remover for Tool Restoration

I have used it. Works well but be careful not to leave too long as the item will start to discolour.

    Reccomend me a whetstone/sharpening setup under £50

I think we are all different. I have never owned an oil stone and wouldn’t dream of sharpening freehand, my way takes longer but is far from complicated. I have worked as a woodworker but I’m self taught and not a professional. The professionals I have worked with all asked me to do their...

    Reccomend me a whetstone/sharpening setup under £50

In theory you want to be able to sharpen freehand, it will speed up your work. In practise it is more about what you want. Learning to sharpen well freehand takes time, bit like cutting dovetails. Oil or water is also up to you, whichever you think suits you better. Quality of stones will make a...

    Resawing 12" wide hardwood

Tungsten spade bits seem quite common in the US but very difficult to find in the UK. I was looking for one when my dovetail saw, that I sent for sharpening, was returned to me as handle and new saw plate, but no holes to attach it to the handle.

    Resawing 12" wide hardwood

I ripped/resawed a 160mm wide 80cm long board 30mm thick to produce two quartersawn 13mm boards recently to make a shooting board. I used a decent quality, but far too short Ryoba, it was 195 mm long and really designed for much finer work, with far to many fine teeth, and it did a remarkably...

    Planer Thicknesser - Griggio FS530

It took me 2 days to register with SCM last week to try and find out precisely what size blades would have been supplied with my planer thicknessser. In the end I called SCM in the UK. Even after registering I still can't get on the SCM parts website in Italy. I used to get my blades sharpened...

    Planer Thicknesser - Griggio FS530

I've had a search online here in Italy but as they went out of business in 2018 and even today websites in Italy can leave a thing or two to be desired, not much to be found other than 2nd hand machines.

Are all hss 18% planer thicknesser blades the same?

I have managed to ruin 2 sets of 300mm blades, they are stored in a plastic box with a moisture catcher but I left them too long. There seems to be a vast difference in price, 25 euro for 3 by big Italian tooling brand to 30 euro each Guhdo, who I believe make professional tooling.
