    5 1/2 Jack

Just bought this, I hope. Assume it will do me well. I also managed to buy a LN no 5 at 30% off which is on its way to me.

Cleaning Small Parts - machine restoration

Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate, Na2CO3, not Sodium bicaronate.

Cleaning Small Parts - machine restoration

Light rust/oxidation will also be removed by ultrasonic cleaner. At not much more than £100 for a decent sized one it has to be more economical than cleaning lots of small fiddly bits by hand. Also, for grease removal, chemicals used are detergents rather than organic solvents.

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

I find it interesting. My chemistry teacher once wrote to my parents complaining I asked too many questions.

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

If you read what I had said you would know I'm quite happy and have no intention replacing the blade. It would be nice however if I knew how the steels compared next time I buy a Veritas plane. For some reason the plane with PM-V11 blade was cheaper at Dieter Schmidt tools, it is usually more...

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

I seem to remember him saying he wouldn't maybe have some much time to contribute.

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

So far I'm happy with the PM-V11. But if I were to buy another plane I'd like to know if there might be benefits associated with the alternatives.

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

I find once the bevel is established and the back flat it really doesn't take me long to resharpen. I am of course assuming that the length of time needed to re-sharpen is the issue. I really hate sharpening so the longer between sharpening the better.

    PM-V11 or A2 blades.

I have recently bought a couple of Veritas block planes with PM-V11 blades. I have no problem sharpening them once prepared but I was curious about the A2 and 01 blades. The price difference isn't that great but would I be better off with one of the other blades? The PM-V11 was actually cheaper...

    Scotch Brite Grey

I believe white may be the finest or not abrasive at all, yellow is 1200, grey 600.

    5 1/2 Jack

I'm 6'2" and 95kg. Being in Italy there aren't any shops I can go into to try them out. I want it for shooting mainly and the 5 1/2 seems popular.

    5 1/2 Jack

It wasn't new. In fact, it was so old I can't remember when I bought it. It was unused until I tried it and thought I had better sell it.

    Dovetail jig opinions

I bought one of the earliest Leigh jigs in the 80's, imported it myself. I have never used it.

Advice needed upvc windows and doors

Our buildings here are fairly nice, but rough stone and the stuff between them is soil, not lime mortar or cement. It is easier to put fixings on the outside of the frame and use mortar to anchor them filling in around afterwards, I use hydraulic lime mortar with a pointing gun but I'd use...

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

I'm hoping to convince someone American to take in an LN 5 1/2 for me. It is a big ask as it is hardly a small item to bring back for me.

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

I have a LN bronze, 4 or 4/12, can never remember which. Very nice to use. Had it for many years but has never been used that much. I'm prepared to wait. Might be Thanksgiving before I see it.

Advice needed upvc windows and doors

I agree if they were a quality product, but I believe these may have been bought on price. There are some breaks, they have clearly been dragged across the floor, and pieces of moulding have been broken off and screwed back on with self-tappers. The tops of the doors aren't level and they were...

Advice needed upvc windows and doors

A neighbour has bought 19 external doors and windows from Leroy Merlin, like B&Q, to install himself and asked me to help. The doors are split and one side can be opened like a window, the top tilted in, I'm afraid I don't know what you call this type of mechanism. The windows are just about OK...

Damaged Veritas block plane from Chronos.
