I have never found him abrasive. It may largely go over my head but I still find it interesting, I find some others on here far more difficult to listen to.
I do have one. It is without dust extraction, I bought it, then found one with dust tube and ended up with two. I seem to remember it being quite expensive, used off eBay. I have a 175 but I believe they are the same.
I don't know why he scribbled, except maybe to aid in taking off a uniform layer. The finish from a hand plane is so much nicer than sanded or machine planed, I guess it could be a purely cosmetic pass of the plane, to improve the finish.
I think they probably did care about their work. Or they wouldn't have left us the instruments they did. Is it that difficult to understand that we are all different and see things in different ways?
I think I may have the crown guard, I'll check. Mine came without sliding table and I found it impossible ot too expensive to make one up from the above.
