Never thought I'd spend over 200 quid on 4 clamps..

I’ve got a number of Bessey cramps too and really like them. For most types of glue up they are brilliant. The large surface area of the heads and their relative parallelism seem to help every the time I use them. They are very heavy though and I do sometimes think that a lighter set of cramps...

    Pallet wood: is this birch???

Am I the only one that has to hear this joke now?

Ripple maple Finish Osmo or Morrells shellac

On such timbers do you ever oil the stock before applying the shellac? Linseed will yellow the wood of course but enhance the figure as well.

    worx 20 volt drill

I do sympathise bob. Buying tools and stuff for a hobby on a budget is a bit of a mine field. Added to that is lack of a meaningful secondhand market in Cyprus so you are stuck with whatever new tat is on the ship from China. Alternatively you might consider which tools you need/use the most and...

    Tersa Blades

I bought a set of the M42 ones for my machine from Woodford. They are pants. Seemed dull straight out of the packet. Just couldn’t get on with them. Have gone back to the HSS ones as they seem much better.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Cool. I’m on the lookout for a mesh RTA - is there one in your collection that you’d recommend?

wax question for custard and others

That sounds like a smashing idea bob. Why didn’t anyone suggest that to you years ago? :D

wax question for custard and others

Sounds good. We nearly took a place in Famagusta this year but in the end went for something in Girne again. Lots of old furniture in Cyprus seems to be finished with varnish of some sort or other but I question how much of it was actually made here. Anything from the past 100 years or so is...

wax question for custard and others

Ah the locals. Don’t you just love em? Why bother with investigating what else might work when there are kebabs to eat, coffees to drink and **** to smoke? I’m going to try another recipe, this time with MC instead of beeswax and a splash more turps to see if that helps. It would bug me...

wax question for custard and others

Well bob Sera’s put her foot down and we are going to Cyprus again. My suggestion of Reykjavík garnered zero support. Let’s see if there is an alternative formulation we can come up with for me to bring you this year. I can try a batch of 50/50 carnauba and MC wax as mentioned above but instinct...

Need Help Please On Wadkin BGS

Hi Joel, Welcome to the BGS club! It’s an exclusive group - we are few and far between. I did a complete restoration on mine which I recorded on the Canadian site a few years ago. I’ll try to find the link for you as it might have some helpful stuff in it (lots of my own waffle as well though)...

    Best glue for Walnut

TB is a good pva as far as my experience goes. For walnut though I’d be tempted to use TB3 as it dries to a brown colour that more closely matches the wood. Has a longer open time as well. I suppose if you are confident in your clamping and that your joints will close up invisibly then it won’t...

    Designing a Home Office Desk

You did an outstanding job on the end grain. I’m guessing it was sanded to the thousands in terms of grit to have it take the finish so well without losing all definition? Things like that really catch my eye and make all the difference.

That waney edged slab is quite stunning Custard. Is it lead wood? It’s beautiful whatever the species.

    Drill Press or Milling Machine?

I wouldn’t recommend trying to remove the foot/base of a fobco. I’m not sure it’s possible but I’ll have a look next time I’m in the shed. The table and head simply clamp on to the column with hand levers. There is also a sleeve that sits under the head to make rotating the head easier. Bring a...

    Workbench top help please

They are the ones I use on my bench. As an aside; the auger they come with is brilliant.
