    Help needed - sticky situation

Hello Rafe - how are you keeping mate? Looking forward to Richard’s do again this year I must say. I put it in the calendar as soon as he announced the date. I’d be careful around the shop if I were you though pal as you clearly must need specs these days; there are at least 8 oafish “gotchas”...

    Help needed - sticky situation

Hi everyone, Apologies are due to all who contributed to this thread as I’m afraid I’ve gone and finished the table without opening a wip. I did intend to post my progress as I took several pictures along the way but what with one thing or another I couldn’t find the the time to both make and...

    Edward Preston 311

9:7 on all of my parts: I wonder if one denotes month or batch and the other it’s sequence in the run?

By the way I don’t think the actual number is of any particular importance. I believe the parts were stamped with a number to ensure they all belonged to the same plane. It doesn’t mean you have the 17th plane made of this pattern as there are probably loads of No. 17s out there.

Yes the parts are all numbered and it has the original Preston iron. Can’t remember what the number is I’m afraid and am not in the shed at the moment. Will confirm next time I’m in there - if I remember! I’m in the process of finishing a coffee table for SWMBO and completing that is consuming...

I’ve got one: If I understand correctly the ones with the red logo on the handle are the older, rarer ones. I have no idea what they are worth in terms of cash but it’s a fabulous tool imho.

    What Wood Rots The Least?

That’s surprising. I would have thought of iroko as being in the “very durable” quadrant.

Are cheap sash cramps worth it?

I think cramps fall into that unsexy category of tool that serious woodworking requires you to just suck up and get the best you can afford. Much like trying to make do with gone-off or inappropriate glue, you run the risk of ruining many hours of careful work with a misstep at the critical...

    table saw blade

Atkinson Walker or Wealden (also made by AW) are great saws as well (made in the U.K. too).

    Which tracksaw?

I’ve got the Makita and find it meets my needs perfectly well (mainly crosscutting wide sheets with rips done on the table saw). I’ve never used a TS55 but can’t imagine it could be that much better tbh (happy to be proven wrong though by those with experience of both). There is very little dust...

    Planner Thicknesser

I’ve got no experience of the Axminster machines other than handling them in store. Some of them do feel distinctly “Chinese” in terms of build quality but can’t comment on their actual usefulness. When I made my decision on which planer thicknesser to buy I went for a second hand Sedgwick MB...

    Sapele vs. Oak for beginner

I was happy with the way my wife’s medicine cabinet ended up I just hated working the Sapele! The constantly reversing grain wasn’t too hard to plane actually, sharpness of iron and correctly set cap took care of that. Rather it was the way that the reversals made paring the dovetails a...

    Help needed - sticky situation

Thanks for the tips everyone. Someone even used the words “memzey”, “high standards” and “craftsmanship” in the same paragraph! “Oafish wood butcher” in that order is probably more accurate. Anyway before I get on to progress - thank you Custard for your very kind offer. I have absolutely no...

    Help needed - sticky situation

Thanks everyone - both for the suggestions and not taking the mickey! I’ve a bit more sanding to do on the top but the bulk removal has been done already so I don’t think that will help too much. I did try gently prying away at it with a knife but no joy. Bleach sounds like a smashing idea...

    Help needed - sticky situation

Hi gang, So I’m making slow and painful progress on a coffee table for SWMBO and am essentially in the home straight. I’ve cut all the joinery for the base, glued up the top and fixed the breadboard ends. When I fixed those ends on, I glued about 2” of the tongue at the centre while leaving the...

    Sapele vs. Oak for beginner

Of the two options you give I’d definitely say oak. This was the last thing I made in Sapele after which I promised myself that I’d avoid using it again as much as possible!

    Best Makita 18v tools

Here you go, jigger and plunge saw both made in the U.K. I think their snazzier chop saws are made here as well:

    Best Makita 18v tools

Yep - I’m away from the shed at the moment but I’ll take a pic next time if I remember. When I’m looking for a new power tool (which is quite infrequent nowadays) I always check for a Makita that fits the bill first. Not only are they professional quality and going to get the job done, there is...
