    Random Orbit Sander advice please

+1 for the Makita BO6030. It’s the only ROS I’ve ever had so I can’t give you an honest comparison but it has worked really well for me for the past few years. Good quality abrasives make a difference in my experience as well. Have been using abranet recently and it’s the best I’ve tried so far.

First go at resawing - a couple of questions.

I’ve only resawn boards a couple of times but the thing I mind out for most isn’t the material lost by the kerf of the blade, it’s the reaction of the wood once it’s been cut. If your board isn’t dry, straight grained and stable then you might well end up with stock too warped to be useful. I’m...

    Tannin/Iron Staining, Oak Galls

I did a bit of research and apparently these Knopper galls are about 50% tannin: https://blogs.reading.ac.uk/whiteknight ... per-galls/ I think I’ve read the same about marble galls as well so I’d imagine these Knopper ones are probably ok for ebonizing. I’ll try it on a bit of scrap when I get...

    Tannin/Iron Staining, Oak Galls

All those were just picked up off the ground. They do look very different to the ones Custard posted and I think they match the “Knopper” type mentioned above. Interestingly some of them feel a little gummy. I imagine that they would need to be dried to be made into an infusion. What are the...

    Tannin/Iron Staining, Oak Galls

Are they any good though? Has anyone tried them out?

    Tannin/Iron Staining, Oak Galls

Hi Custard. I’ve seen some things I think are oak galls coming off the oaks near me (Herts) but they are not perfectly round like the ones you show. Rather they are a bit knobbly looking with small flats on the outside. Are they the same thing and would they work for ebonizing as well? I’ll...

Need some advice on jointer planes

I’ve got a Stanley #386 as well although I haven’t used it to joint an edge in a long time - basically since I taught myself how to do it free hand. Now I find it most useful for planing a non-square edge, like on a long bevel or for joints that are not meant to be square. It saves on having to...

Taking a plunge to kitchen cabinet making

Very interesting. MFC does appear have moved on. Quick question to you bob if I may? Where do you source your egger boards from? You’re quite close to me and I might give them a call.

Taking a plunge to kitchen cabinet making

Good point on the size of the sheets. I do have a plunge saw and am well set up for working on 4’x8’ boards but MFC might be a bit too big and cumbersome. It will be either getting the panels cut to size for me or back to MDF/ply. I’m leaning towards MDF/ply I think (I inherently distrust...

Taking a plunge to kitchen cabinet making

FYI if you’d like some good examples of top quality work in kitchen making then I recommend looking up some of doctor bob’s previously posted examples. They are as good as I have ever seen. On the topic of MFC - how much do people pay for 18mm Egger boards around the country? I’m down in St...

    Atkinson Walker Saws

I have a number of their circular saws for some of my machines. Was trying to place an order at one of their retailers yesterday (won’t say which one) and was informed that they had gone out of business. Absolutely gutted if true. Best saws I have tried by far.

    Saw bushing washers

That’s interesting as the washers all have something of a serrated or knurled edge to them. I had assumed this was the case in order to help them bite into the saw plate but perhaps not? Have the ones you have previously used been the same or were the edges smooth?

    Saw bushing washers

On the blade. It’s an extremely tight fit and nigh on impossible to true to saw plate. Any ideas on the best way to go about doing this?

    Saw bushing washers

Hi gang, I have a couple of machines with 5/8” arbors. Blades to suit are generally more expensive than the standard 30mm bore jobbies that are commonly available at most outlets. I do have a couple of 30mm to 5/8” bushing washers but am struggling to get them on correctly as they tend to go on...

Wadkin BGS 12" saw motor conversion

Hi Jorgoz - quick question; how many wires come out of the windings and into the junction box? It looks like it might be six in which case you can close the motor back up as it’s ready to be wired delta. You will need to identify the beginning and end of each tail though which is where the...
