Given that I mainly work in solid, it would have to be a reliable, solid and accurate planer thicknesser and an equally solid bench. The P/T takes much of the drudgery out of stock prep and the bench, well, that just makes everything easier and more enjoyable.

Just keep it simple and you won't go far wrong. As long as you are actually aiming for your trunnions and not the top or, indeed the stock you are going to finish, you won't have problems and therefore don't need to complicate matters more than that.

That’s exactly what GT85 is. Bit pricey from Halfords but good stuff. I use it and the PTFE quite a lot in the workshop.
