    Planer knives

Greetings Oh Sage Ones, I have an old Elu 1161 planer/thicknesser. Can anyone recommend a source for knives? Both HSS and TCT, please. Thanks, Austin

Hello Pete, thanks for that. I think that’s a very good idea. Austin

I'm assuming he's using T&G?? No, his current thinking is a loose tenon running in grooves in the edges of the planks. Austin

    Expansion spaces

Greetings, Oh Sage Ones, I’m mentoring for the first time. The chap is designing and building some very nice garden gates. The gates will be made of Larch, and contain panels of planked timber 110mm by 20mm. I have limited experience of outdoor projects. I need advice for him on how far apart...

Edge joint, one inch birch ply?

I’ve actually made a pair of these. I used oak as I had some. They work really well. If you’re going to make them from ply, I’m guessing you’re asking about joining the foot to the bottom of the leg. I used doweled mortice & tenons, but in ply a few biscuits should do it. You may need to beef up...

advice on tools for timber framing.

Here’s a photo of the verandah that I built a few years ago. I bought a used Makita morticer, and used AJB’s methods to cut tenons. I had very sharp 1 1/2 and 2 inch chisels. I used ‘steady’ oak in an attempt to reduce shrinkage and movement - I probably wasted my money there.

    Smoking morticer chisel

Folks, many, many thanks for all your responses. I have cleaned all the crud off using oven cleaner, and the auger does look pretty blunt. Surprisingly (having read your responses), the chisel still seems fairly sharp. I have only ever used a saw doctor to sharpen these things - can I simply use...

    Smoking morticer chisel

Greetings, oh sage ones. I use a chisel morticer, amnd have recently cut about 150 1/2 inch mortices in oak. Thechisel now smokes very badly in use, as there is a build-up of resin/dust which is literally boiling and giving off a lot of acrid smoke. What can I do to clean it off? Many thanks, Austin

    Choosing species

I agree, Western Red Cedar is very good for outdoor use. My house in Canada had windows made of it, and they were fabulous. Be careful with the dust - it's pretty nasty and will cause nose bleeds. Austin

    window section advice please

Thanks for that, ZB1. I have read several books that suggest that way forward, but I don't understand the detail. At the corners, how do you stop the adjacent cover boards from gaping? How do you make sure the coverborads don't cup? How do you stop the water rotting the soleplate covers? Do...

Thanks for that Roger, can you tell me where I should be looking for quality espagnolette hardware, please? Regards, Austin

Sourcing Wooden Windows: Thermal Efficiency & Quality

Hi, Danny, thanks for that. I found 'The Window Man's comments very interesting. Particularly the bit about ventilating the area below the DGU, and allowing water to escape via drain holes. I don't know if they should be ventilated to the interior or the exterior, but I am guessing the latter...

Sourcing Wooden Windows: Thermal Efficiency & Quality

Thanks, Dibs, I think I understand. Are all these bits and pieces (locator blocks, setting blocks , tape and sealant) readily available? Austin

Dibs, sorry to be so stupid, but what do you mean by that? What is 'fully bedded'? Austin

    window section advice please

Austin. - just picked this up on my tablet whilst travelling through Laos on my way to Vietnam and Cambodia, so a bit difficult to offer a lot of help. My project was for 2 sets of bifold doors, 3 single windows, plus a double and triple. I wrote up how I made the singles on this forum, and...

    window section advice please

Hi, Roger, As a matter of fact, I posted a similar question on that forum last month, and although the replies were very helpful, I am still a long way off a design. Could you suggest where I might look for a section design? I have looked for books, but failed to find one that looks suitable...

    window section advice please

Hi, Roger - it was actually addressed to RogerM, but I would welcome any advice from yourself also. I will shortly be building a traditional oak timber-framed extension. I have been advised to use 'steady' oak, as the movement of green oak would be too active to consider DG units. My question...

    window section advice please

Hi, Roger, I am shortly to start an Oak timber framed extension to my house, and will almost certainly making my own windows, too. Can I ask - how did you get on? Many thanks, Austin
