    Productive day today ?

I finished making a form for the rockers. Adam W - really sorry to hear of your Dads problems. All my best wishes to you both. Jacob - where on earth did you get Seville oranges from at this time of year? We can only get them in January!

    Which glue?

Greetings, oh sage ones. I’m building a couple of rocking chairs, and the rockers themselves will be laminated strips. In past times, I always used cascamite, as my old tutor told me that pva could ‘creep’. I have read several comments on this venerable forum, causing me to question continued...

Hello Vaderag, My understanding is that traditionally pallets are made of poplar, mainly because poplar is unsuitable for anything else. I may well make myself unpopu

    Kitchen Plinth Jointing

When I fitted solid oak skirting in my verandah, I achieved lengths of nearly 4 metres by cutting dovetails and joining as that.

    Help!!! Hornets!!!

Hi Kev, they do enjoy lightin the dusk. We get a lot here (Normandy), and although they do look really scary, they are not aggressive like wasps. They probably won’t hang around, but if they do can be easily killed with those cans of wasp killer. Personally, unless they move into the house, I’d...

Drill and impact driver combo kit recommendations

I haven’t found that. It recharges pretty quickly (about 20 or 30 minutes). Being relatively small, it’s easy, light and enjoyable to use. For bigger stuff, I use an Elu 240 volt drill. It’s pretty rare that I need the Elu. Your choice.

Drill and impact driver combo kit recommendations

Hello Sachakins, I got a 10.5 volt Makita drill and impact driver set 8 years ago, LiOn batteries, I’m really pleased with them. I’m retired, so only projects for my single, demanding and poor-paying client. Certainly not the demand of a working professional.

    Buying my first plane.

Hello Jimmy, I’m no expert, but I would have thought forty or fifty pounds would get you a half decent 5 1/2. You can be absolutely certain that the iron will need sharpening, and if you have never done it before, you will be on a fairly steep learning curve. You will find plenty of opinions on...

    Router with best dust extraction

I wish you luck on this one. I have several routers, none of them are ‘good’ at catching the residue, but the best is a DW623. It’s not designed to work in a table, though. I think you would be better off using a morticer - it’s still impossible to catch the chips, but the chips aremuch larger...

How can I put a bullnose on the edge of this oak tread?

Don’t use an electric plane, it will end in tears. Plane a 45 degree chamfer top and bottom, going maybe a third of the thickness, then plane off both of the arris’s on each chamfer. Keep planing off the arris’s (as they diminish) until you are happy with the shape. You can make a reverse shape...

    Help with making driveway gates

Hello Geoff, I recently mentored a chap making garden gates, and they came out very well. As I recall, he made them from larch, and I believe that ro be a good choice. My own gates are commercially made of oak. The important thing is to make sure that the gates are braced (a heavy member running...

    Sawn green oak tolerances

Hello. Don’t worry. You’re not building an extra large piece of fine furniture. As Adam said, construction using green oak (and ‘steady’ oak) is scribing. Mortice and tenons with pegs. I was very uncertain when I built my verandah and bought several books. You will need steel draw pins and a...
