    Dowel size advice

Hello, I very rarely use dowels, but a rule of thumb for a traditional mortice and tenon is a third. The tenon is one third the thickness of the timber. As a starter for ten, I would run with a similar approach to dowels. I am assuming that you are doing edge to face joints. If you are pegging...

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

I buy old chisels off eBay. I generally only go for Marples or other premium manufacturers. Excellent value. I’ve recently bought a matching round and hollow, but they’re still in the UK. I live in France, and since Brexit the import charges are eye watering. 100% on some glue - and I still...

Not sure what to finish with?

Hello automaton, welcome to the forum. I’m struggling to recommend a finish, but I think I’m leaning towards Danish oil. Make it yourself. One third each of tung oil, linseed oil and yacht varnish.

    Push sticks again.......

My tutor at college told me that a ‘short’ fence should end at the gullet of the teeth. The theory is that the riving knife will continue the track of the material. He also said that if sawing to less than 6 inches wide (150mm for the youngsters), then a push stick is mandatory. His name - Tony...

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

Hello Robert, It’s always difficult to tell from photos, but I would guess the rails and corners to all be around 40mm. The rails look about 300 or 350mm deep to me. The Cabinetman example looks beautifully made to me, if I were you I would try to get friendly, and get more info on construction...

    Restoring an antique dining table...

That’s a lovely mahogany table. I’m afraid I can’t recommend a finish, I would probably use oil. The scratches bother me. Do you place your cutlery on the mats or the tabletop? Best wishes. Austin
