So it's back: Britain's Best Woodworker

I watched it last night. Still a lot of very basic errors, but they seem much more competent than last years entries. The guy who won the veneer-cutting exercise really dodged a bullet, imho - his table was a disaster and should have sent him home.

    Epoxy glue

Greetings, oh sage ones. I am building a pair of Sam Maloof rocking chairs, and the advice is to use a 24hour epoxy to glue the legs to the rockers. Can anyone recommend a suitable adhesive, please? Many thanks. Austin

    Old Elu Power Tools

Hello, I have several Elu tools, and they are all more than 20 years old. Excellent tools, in my opinion. Try Google with model numbers. Best wishes.

Leaking timber front door - how to fix?

It could be difficult with a fielded panel, but I converted an old, heavily built interior door to exterior by (amongst other things) swapping the exterior moulding with bolection moulding. No leaks whatsoever.

Covid vaccine, if you haven't had it ...

That is awful. You have all my sympathy. My youngest is nearly 40, and he too, denies the vaccine. It scares me to death.

Hello from a very wet Somerset.

Welcome to the forum, and I look forward to reading about how you progress with that fabulous saw. I live in Normandy, France. Best wishes.

    Newbie to Everything Woodworking

Hello Dave, welcome to the forum. I was born in Ward End a long, long time ago! I can’t help a lot on finishes, I generally use oil based products. Best wishes, and good luck!

    Withdrawn Everything

So sorry to hear this slate 1234. My workshop was emptied in 2000, and I still feel the bile rising. Happy to donate a few quid. Good luck. Austin

    What’s this planes task?

Hello everyone, my late Uncle Norman was a bodybuilder/coachmaker. He almost certainly would have had experience with planes like this. The prices stagger me! Four and sixpence at the turn of the century! My grandfather was a machine gunner in WWI, and was paid 4/- a week!

The Joiner Made Oil Stone Box and Other Bench Stuff Thread

I don’t own any, but my Uncle was a highly skilled’body builder’ at Wolesley Cars. His boxes had marks from forstner drills. Adam, I believe it’s a ‘raised and fielded’ lid. The angled surfaces are fielded, while the raised surface is, well, raised.

    I had so much fun

I was born and raised in Birmingham. So ‘chuck it’n misskin’ means throw it away. I love local expressions.

Diamond or oilstone/wetstone for sharpening hand planes etc and what grade.

This is pretty much the position that I’m in, except I don’t yet have a decent diamond stone. My eldest lad has just bought a Rider from Axminster, so I’ll see how he gets on. To be frank, I think most stones/wet&dry paper will work, a lot is down to personal preference. You will get good...

Accoya Front Door in coastal location

Exterior timber suffers badly. I would avoid varnish, it fails, then has to be scraped off . It’s a lot of work. Oil is OK, but has to be repeated frequently. A chum has used Osmo oil, but it was fairly recently, so I can’t comment. I used paint. Sorry.

    Oak Bureau

Traditionally it was linseed oil; one coat a day for a week, then one coat a week for a month, then one coat a month for a year. Beeswax does make it smell wonderful!

    Furniture Components Thicknesses

I generally make cabinet sides in solid wood - frame and panel. The frames are about 20mm. Traditional drawer fronts are also 20mm, sides maybe 10mm and backs the same or thinner (6 to 8mm). Does that help? Best wishes Austin
