    In praise of great companies.

Yesterday I bought some new tools from a few different companies. The service was so good and the products were delivered within 24 hours even though I only paid for standard delivery. The companies in question were Workshop Heaven and Thomas Flinn. Does anybody else have praise for fantastic...

Which cordless system are you going with..if any?

All my battery tools a few corded and my nail gun are Makita. I have a few others by Triton and Record Power but these are corded machines. I am extremely happy with Makita and have no wish to change.

I`m as far from an expert in these things as its possible to get but looking at the curved makers mark I would say owner adapted. My real question is how the f*** do you use the thing. Apologies in advance to anyone offended by my colourful language.

    Plane fun

Thank you for the information. I already have tool for shaping and cutting out necks, I was thinking specifically of gauges to mark out where the frets go. I will eventually make jigs for routing truss rod cavities when I am ready to make my first neck. I was also thinking I needed fret files...

    Plane fun

I`m still building my kit, I have a little more than the basic kit. Some power tools and some hand tools. Until this year I was finding it difficult to use the planes, after quite a bit of fettling I now find it easier. I too aspire to build guitars although that's a little beyond my skill level...

    Plane fun

Thank you for the advise, I was considering a no 5 1/2 next and maybe leave it at that. There is a second hand Stanley no 6 in pretty good condition going for £35 in a small local tool shop. Would you be advising I looked at that instead.

    Plane fun

Yesterday I picked this Record no. 78 rebate plane. It was made between 1930 and 1955. Sadly its missing the fence arm and screw to hold the fence in place. If anyone can point me in the direction of the parts I need I would be very grateful.

    Plane fun

After learning so much from my Vintage chisel thread, I decided to do the same with planes. The difference is it will include new as well as vintage planes. I'm looking for information on types, techniques or anything interesting plane related. You can even show off a particular plane or an...

I've picked up another chisel today for £1. It's a Robert Sorby and I think it's a paring chisel, approx 1/4". It needs quite a bit of work but I'm looking forward to tackling it.

    Cleaning Tools

I will be concentrating on the metalwork. For large areas on a table saw or band saw I you Machine wax after cleaning with wire wool. For hand tools such as Planes, chisels etc I clean all the surfaces of saw dust then use wire wool to remove any stains or resin. Then I apply tool wax and store...

I thought I`d do a little research on your behalf. Charles Nurse Catalogue 1902 (taths.org.uk) C. Nurse & Co – The Coopers' Tool Museum (cooperstoolmuseum.com) I can`t find out too much but they seemed to be based in London.
