Interesting Pieces of Furniture - 2

Something that sticks in my mind from my visit to Robert Thompson (as a tourist) was the adzed finish on some of his pieces. Of course I do not have the knowledge and expertise of some but I do not recall seeing this type of finish elsewhere. Is the use of an adze to finish a table top such a...

How to separate quotes from 2 window manufacturers?

Grebo Welcome, Is it possible that both firms are using differemt terms to describe the same wood type as Scandivian Redwood is a softwood. I'd be inclined to ask eaxactly what they mean by softwood heartwood. Andy

    How to cool the workshop

As well as the white roof over here we can buy solar reflective paint, silver in colour, might help a bit but even if it bought the inside temp down to the ambient temperature it would still be way to hot for me. Andy

Why have I never thought of that before (off topic)

Cor thanks Alf I can't remember the last time anyone sent be a poem before. This is why I like to read a manual at my leisure (twas on the train actually) rather than using an application's help file. The manual is OSX the Missing Manual available from all good bookshops and Amazon. Andy

    Foamboard

Roger, did you get around to sourcing any of this? I'm awaiting prices and min order quantities from Seconds and Co but I fear this will be palleted quantities only. Or course I'm keeping my eye out for skips. I noticed in Tombo's TV cabinet thread he was using some "insulation blocks" and I...

    tv stand WIP

Tom, excellant and thanks for showing the warts and all WIP images. Great stuff. Can you tell me more about that insulation block? I've been wrestling with how I can cut 8x4 sheets easily on my own in a timber yard car park & I was thinking along similar lines last night. What exactly are they...

Why have I never thought of that before (off topic)

Matt, Discovered a neat little trick on the Mac the other night that is even simpler than print to pdf. Simply hold down Control, Shift and 4 and a little cross appears on the screen drag that over the area of a window you want to keep and release. Voila a .png file appears on the desktop...

    Comments please on Kitchen Table

Each to his own of course but I have no problem with seeing the end grain on a table top. My own oak dining table has not suffered from the lack of a breadboard end. 13 years in centrally heated houses and no signs of movement yet. Andy

    b**** computers again

Paul, I'm not familiar with IE7 but could you try uninstalling the doc viewer application (Adobe Acrobat perhaps?) & then reinstalling taking care with the installation settings. If it's not Adobe the just ditch it and load the free version of Adobe. Like Roger this type of problem and my...

    Anyone need a table !!!!!!!!!!

It's not the size, shape or design of the table that does my head in but the over powering grain pattern on the top. Andy

Interesting Pieces of Furniture - 2

The reasons I was not so keen on the Becksvoort piece are certainly not echoed here. I like the shapes and the curves although it is a little too fine and thin for my liking. I'd bet that this piece would be a lot more challenging to construct than the "big box with small boxes inside tall...

It Didn't Come Out As Expected...

Gill, I think it looks excellant. There are a number of threads around here on photography techniques. One tip I picked up was to use a tripod and no flash, this helps to remove the shadow caused by the flash. Andy

    My small workshop

Frederico, You call that a small workshop - perhaps because it is so tidy and well organised that it does not appear so small to me. regards Andy
