    Markets in London?

I should image this is why he is coming, to escape the insufferable heat of a summer in Oz? David

    Tiger Myrtle. (small hand size)

Coming along beautifully Stewie. We too in the UK are experiencing an unusually warm period, with expectations for it to remain so until after Christmas. The warmest Winter in 70 years I believe. A great excuse for Westminster to hike taxes to address global warming...............yeah right! David

Nice detail work Stewie. On your last point, what is your remedy for handle movement when the screw bolts have been nipped up. I have a couple of old back saws awaiting renovation, both of which are loose. David

    Table saw dust collection splitter

Hi - Before you spend time trying to find a suitable connector you will need to ensure you have enough suction i.e a powerful enough extractor. Serving two ports at once will need a minimum of a 1.5 HP extractor. A smal shop vac hooked up to the saw will not pull all the dust away. If you have...

    drum sander loading

Looks like you had a bargain there Mark, even if it turns out to be a junker the new(ish) motor will find a use. On that point, I would have thought a 1HP motor would be a little underpowered? I have dedicated JET 16-32 model ( I think) the motor is 1.5 HP which can on occasion stall if too...

    dictum tools

I have not placed orders with Dictum, although I can thoroughly recommend Dieter Schmidt too. Great quality and a speedy delivery. Sadly my working knowledge of German is not great. Thankfully his staff have a greater understanding of the English Language than I do. So ordering is no problem David

How long do plane blades last?

However to answer the OP's question. I expect the variables are too numerable to offer a realistic response? Hardness of steel/alloys of the iron, frequency of use, type of work (fine work more sharpening, carpentry tasks less so perhaps) etc are or could be contributing factors to the wear of...

How long do plane blades last?

It was actually 4 irons he said he has replaced in his 50 year career. I suspect that figure represents good value for money although he has a stack of #4 planeslined up on his bench and tool cab, so I can only assume he does not use the same one all day everyday. David

    Tiger Myrtle. (small hand size)

I think out of the whole operation the one aspect which would cause me most concern is cutting the saw plate kerf. At this point a whole lot of time and effort has gone into the project I expect. On a seperate note. Over the weekend I sharpened and set a couple of vintage (although good...

Table Saw Sled - Can you do it the other way?

http://lumberjocks.com/assets/pictures/ ... /85501.jpg or http://www.popularwoodworking.com/proje ... lesaw-jigs Keep things simple and don't try to over engineer. The more you build in the more tolerance you will need to consider. The top image will require you to remove the saw guard so...

    Oil finish

Thanks for the reassurance. I am in no immediate rush to apply the wax coats, the item is a mid February birthday gift so cure time is not an issue on this project. Thanks again David

    Plane (and sharpening) training?

I can see the merits in both free hand and jig sharpening. For me it is by use of jig (in the main) chisels and plane irons are sharpened this way (LV MKII) it provides repeatability, quick to use and removes minimal material from the iron. As BB mentioned, free hand sharpening for me seemed...
