    What next plane to make?

I must confess to not appreciating the values of ancient tools nor indeed how plentiful they were as the time, or now even. The prices I identified were circa the First World War era. A tradesman of the day would have had to lay out equivalent to 3 days wages for a Norris plane. I suspect...

    Stains/dyes

I have a couple of small repair/restoration jobs to complete and was wondering what you consider to be the best stains/ dyes? By that I mean water based or spirit based? Does the type of existing finish dictate what to use, although the final top coat will resemble the existing finish where...

    What next plane to make?

I will be interested to see how it turns out. On a separate issue, having looked at the link you provided the catalogue price for the 12 1/2" version was 27/6' (27 shillings and six pennies) in 1914 when the average weekly wage for a ships joiner/wheelwright etc was 40/ (40 shillings)...

    Adjustable Sticking Board

Derek, What is the purpose of the stepped fence on your sticking board? Is it to permit support for already rebated sides /edges where another profile has to be shaped onto an adjacent edge, such as on sash bars etc ??. Is the wide step to accommodate specific work you do or simply wide enough...

Disston 6 PPI refurb .......with some extras

DBT85 - it was my intention too just to have his old saw hanging on the wall. My grandfather was not a woodworker either, he was a painter and decorator, so like you mention, probably just a saw for the odd job around the house. Give it a go, i found it a really interesting learning curve. Just...

Disston 6 PPI refurb .......with some extras

One of the refurbed saws was my grandfathers too. If it is a 6 PPI saw then jointing/sharpening/setting should not be difficult. The teeth are large and easy to work on. Even if the blade is a little twisted or kinked you may still be able to salvage it, although that may involve chopping it a...

Making a casement window (single glazed)

Great post, are you thinking of posting something similar regards sash style windows with mullions/muntins?

    Making kitchen doors or buy

There may kitchen door manufacturers near you? There is a company in Huntingdon, very friendly making only kitchen doors. There problem would be having them change the machining process to replicate your door. They may be worth giving a call. The company I is called Door2size. Globe Road...

Sounds good Alan, if you can work out the PM system (I have now sent you a PM) we can exchange details to arrange a viewing if that suits?? David

    Making kitchen doors or buy

Handy - it seems like your route for replacing the door from a supplier is now limited. From your handle, I assume you are capable of turning your hand to such things. Making kitchen doors is not difficult, particularly Shaker style doors, probably one of the least intricate doors to build...

    rust prevention

Paste wax and baby oil. Never have rust problems. You could also invest in a dehumidifier. (Which would require regular emptying of collected water) Assuming you have a power source of course. Good luck with it.

    Couple of lathes plus accessories

Alan, I could be interested in your metal working lathe. Could you PM me with a little more info on the tooling you are including in the sale, does it come with a stand etc. I am visiting my folks in Girvan next week so could pop over to have a look if no one else snaps it up. David

    W. Marples & Sons Bow Saw

I have a few Bow saws of varying dimensions. Surprisingly accurate an easy to use. I bought a couple quite recently from the Bay. I think £11 was the most I paid. I suspect if Paul Sellers starts using them in his videos regularly, then the popularity will increase with the price rising...

Thanks Fitzroy. I am no expert either, although bringing back old tools to usefulness is indeed rewarding.

Disston 6 PPI refurb .......with some extras

Unless the saw plate is particularly warped, bowed, pitted or the teeth are in a particularly poor state the longest part of the refurb is waiting for the coats of finish to dry on the handles. As a result, I had several saws all in various stages of completion. That way I was assembling one...

Disston 6 PPI refurb .......with some extras

The handle looks and feels a lot better, least I think so. I have completed several more saws, more to come.

Disston 6 PPI refurb .......with some extras

Here is another saw I recently brought back from near death. It is a Disston 6 PPI crosscut saw with a 26" plate. Although in a rough state the plate was good and straight with little pitting. The handle on the other hand had seen some heavy wear. I never really like the " block" shape of the...
