The other one that confused me for a time was "mineral spirits" I found out that "white spirit" in the US is something completely different. I've still to establish what denatured alcohol is - is it meths without the purple dye - to prevent it from being turned into spirit/whisky?

Sometimes the simple solution provides the best option. What you have done is going to keep the plane stable and easy to store.

I would agree with you, so I have been trying to find replacement brass wheels. I figured that perhaps when money was tight or an expresed need for brass, i.e. during times of war when the need for bulle/tshell casings casing took preference over hand plane needs. Thanks again david

Gents - I was wondering, is there a significant reason as to why Stanley Bailey planes come with brass and ali iron adjuster wheels? I have a 4 1/2 & a 5 1/2 which appear to be of the same era, both of which have the ali adjuster wheel, while the rest of my growing collection have the brass...

Sorry to labour the point, but have you found the white spirit to be compatible with long term exposure to a cast iron bed of your planer or table saw bed. You see I'm a little prissy over my gleaming cast iron tool beds and don't relish immovable stains caused by the spirit. :oops:

The new Craftsman range of tools, since being manufactured in China are still sold by Sears but known in the States as "Crapsman" which kind of gives a clue to their quality.

Mike, if the screws you are talking about are short stubby screws with a wide spaced thread then they just screw into the chip board. You will have to drill pilot holes first as they have no self drilling point. Take your time and be sure not to damage the drilled hole. I had to repair a similar...
