You are so lucky to be so well informed

 Yep, you kick them out the nest then they wangle their way back in. I'm sure they will be good company for you if they loacte nearby, though not so near you become the resident baby sitter! It sounds like you are past the finishing line with the work and only 'as and when work' required...

    Expanding Circular Dining Table

This will be around for a couple of hundred years for people to enjoy and appreciate. Incredible craftsman ship. David

Pleased to see the roof is on Paul, least to ensure a water tight structure. I know Chris was concerned about condensation, however I think you would encounter that with any material particulary as the humidity factor is so high in parts of Scotland. Ok perhaps a little more with a metal roof...

    Modern Plane Irons

=D> =D> =D> Nwell said sir! Perhaps in my opening gambit I should have mentioned I am a hobby woodworker, thus not as knowledgable as many of those qualified and able who have previously contributed. However, I am sure many, including professional woodworkers have welcomed the new alloys used...

    Modern Plane Irons

Again, a clear case of a personal preference, and again fine. I use diamiond plates to hone my blades and as far a speed is concerned I cannot think of anything quicker. Three or four strokes on the fine plate, a similar number of strokes on the ex ex fine has the blade (3mm) thick with a light...

I'm pleased you are enjoying your retiremenmt up there Paul, my own retirement is next year and we too have been deciding where to relocate to. Unfortunately SWMBO likes town life, so some form of compromise has to be made. Anyway, I look forward to reading and viewing your WIP on the wshop...

It was just my crass attempt at humour Paul. You are indeed in a beautiful part of the world, much of the focus on Scottish scenery is favoured towards the Highlands. If anyone was to take a day or two to discover Kirkcudbrightshire/ Wigtoshire they would, as you have done fall in love with the...

    Modern Plane Irons

It is interesting to read how some favour the old Stanley/Record irons over the more modern alloy steels, nothing wrong with that, although I have been surprised at negativity (by some) towards what I can only assume is an advancement in steel technology. Just an observation. :) David

    Wall hung Plane Till

SVB - Not a cheeky question at all, the plane in question I believe is a scrub plane. It now resides in another small wall cab I built to house such and other joinery planes (Once I upload the pics I will show that too.) n0legs - Thanks mate for the kind comment. I am pleased it has given you...

    Wall hung Plane Till

Thanks for the kind words Mike, much appreciated. Possibly not ideal to have the hanging loops. However spaces dictates and this was the version which best suited my needs and available space. Not too much of an issue however as the loops tend to hang open after a plane has been removed...

'Turn left'? how far left? Castle Douglas/ Newton Stewart? or left still? Kirkcubrightshire? I'm from Girvan originally, you've done very well considering the rain fall this summer. At least you'll never have to worry about drought up there. David

    Wall hung Plane Till

You know, having been a member of UKWS for around 6 years or so I don't think I have ever visited the projects section, god knows why not. Anyway, thought I would add a few pics of my last but one small wshop project. A plane till made from some of the recycled timber when we pulled down our...

So, with regards to the chisels you mention, the ones with low ground angles, are you talking of chisels of 1/4" or less? David

    Modern Plane Irons

Thanks for all valuable advice and information, very interesting and useful. It would seem my query has been answered, to a degree at least, 'horses for courses' I suspect and perhaps a little further experimenmtation is required on my part to discover which types of steels work best for the...

    Modern Plane Irons

Thanks for the informative feedback gents, much appreciated. Mouppe - when you mention the new steel from Veritas, are you referring to the PM-11 steel? and if so, are saying the A2 steel holds a better and longer edge? In addition, and as a matter of interest what types of wood are you working...

    Is this a Rutlands Plane

Interesting and informative response Andy. I was not thinking of purchasing one of their planes myself although if the plane is similar to those at Rutlands or indeed the QS range it would appear to be a consideration for those interested given thr price. If nothing else it certainly looks...

Ok Jacob, Have you any info on the resiliance and quality of the steel.

    Modern Plane Irons

I am not concerned as to the thickness of the blades relative to honing, more regards the quality and resiliance of the steels.
