    Varnish

Stroing it up side down may help but the best way I have found if to lay a filter on top, cut a scrap of thick polythene to as near as to the circumference of the tin and lay it over the top of the varnish, much more effective.. David

    My Sitooterie

Paul, Perhaps I "bigged" my shop up a little. just a 22mm T&G boards laid on 4 x 2 studs. then lined with 18mm WBP ply. I painted it so not to cause not too much of an eye sore for neighbours ( and of course us). David

    Timber Porch Frame

Mark, I would think 3x material a little flimsy for a structure such as your are proposing, particularly if you are considering windows or hanging doors. Therefore 4x would be my choice for studs. I would also be looking at least 6x material for the joists. Its surprising how much weight is in...

    Benchtop multi sander

Reassuring to hear, I have my sanding needs covered although I like the versitility of the bobbin and belt, which is very popular in US hobby workshops. David

    Is this a Rutlands Plane

Assuming the planes are made in the same factory ( I was told they were but cannot be certain) Would it then be fair to state the WH planes are the "flawless" planes while the ones at sold by Rutlands are perhaps not quite perfect, although too good to end up on scrap pile? David

    Modern Plane Irons

Charles, you need to find a "cool" hobby for the summer months. We have the odd day in the UK when the temp hits the 80's, we even made it to the magical 100 about 15 years ago. How you can work in regular 105 degrees is beyond me. My blood would literally be boiling in that heat and so things...

    Lubrication of Saw Blades

I apply wax paste with a scotch bright pad from time to time, lubs the blade, removes all the gunk to ensure the blade remains smooth and rust free. Be sure to keep away from the teeth with the pad though. Good luck David

Filing mouth on 4 1/2 Record plane to fit veritas blade/iron

It is a very simple process, just take your time as it is very easy to remove too much metal from the front of the mouth in your eagerness to get the job done. Been there done that. I would recommend you buy a new file for the job, as the one I had was old and required too much elbow grease...

Wooden Handles...Plastic Handles...but which is best...?

    Skew block planes

Custard/Music Man/Jacob/John/Derek, Gents - Your adice as accomplished and experienced woodworkers is much appreciated. I already have a few ornaments, so perhaps I will need to reconsider this one. Thanks again =D> David

    Skew block planes

Thanks for your thoughts Andy. I suspect your view could be correct as it is probably a luxury tool rather than a necessary one. However, I am sure it has its advantages in certain situations, just wondered if that usefullness would extend to situations where perhaps the grain direction in a...

    Skew block planes

Hi Ed, Yes I have purchased several, of my LV planes from DS at Fine tools. I was considering the PM-v11 steel iron version, a little more wedge however still competative. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on the plane, I would welcome any other thoughts on the usefullness of one or both planes...

    Skew block planes

I have for some time been considering the merits of the Veritas skew block plane. I would be interested to hear from those that have, or have owned one. Also, would you consider having a pair (left/rifgt) useful or an unnecessary exuberence. I have several LA and standard block planes...

    Modern Plane Irons

Sweatshirt to keep sweat from running down my arms to the tool and wood. You're looking at a tired puppy who couldn't care less about edges that go off too soon. I wish the Marples went off faster. I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for little fairies that flit around bitc*ing about planes...

    Benchtop multi sander

Does anyone have experience of this sander? It would appear similar to the RIGID brand machine sold in the US which receives great reviews. http://www.rutlands.co.uk/pp+unbeatable ... omo=DK7010 However the internal workings of such a machine are of much consideration. I had a Delta brand...

    My Sitooterie

I particularly like the US style of house building (timber clad) perhaps not ideal for our damper climes but they do look twee. I have built my back garden workshop on a similar ( but smaller ) vein with a large overhand with vents. If I remember, I will post a piccy or two. David

    Modern Plane Irons

Of course you must also consider the time it takes to flatten the waterstone , which I assume needs attention each time you hone an iron. Again three times more with the vintage steel? David

    Building the Lingerie Chest

I look forward to your next installment Derek, what I find most impressive, apart from the work itself of course, is your enthusiasm and willingness to share your experiences and learning on the forum. Anyways, thanks for the update and good luck with finishing the mitre saw build David

    Building the Lingerie Chest

What's the latest on the build, Derek? has there been much progress or has LIFE gotten in the way? David

Nice save and another tool saved from the landfill. David
