When will woodworking machinery come down in price?

Do NOT post links like that  It might look like an innocuous auction of a few pieces of woodworking machinery but scroll down the page and you find this: http://data.bidmaster.co.uk/whpeacock1/ ... S&status=C All from one collector apparently. Strewth! How many planes does a man need...

    Health issue and weight problems

Don't know about improve but I am reminded of the time when I was doing InterRail around Scandinavia. I had a stop-over in a place called Andelsnes between Bergen and Narvik in Norway. Since I had some time to kill I decided to climb the mountain that rises behind the town. Not exactly...

    bonus or not

Which leaves me wondering. If it is her 'second home' will she be liable for Capital Gains Tax when she sells like the rest of us would or are the rules different for MPs? Andrew

    Vinyl to I-pod

If you have an Aux-Out on your amp (or pre-amp) and Aux-In on your computer then a suitable lead should be all you need. Audacity (which is free) should be fine for splitting tracks and topping and tailing the recording. Then use iTunes to convert to mp3. Andrew

    bonus or not

Agreed, What I was trying to determine in my first post was what those targets were such that the chairman of a bank is still eligible for a bonus when the whole sector is in the mess it is in. The chairman of LloydsTSB was on the radio this morning saying that he was not going to take his...

    bonus or not

There is a big difference between profits and shareholder value though. Barclays may have made big profits (however they account for them) but by refinancing they have significantly reduced shareholder value which is what matters to shareholders (a lot of them individuals who hold Barclays...

    bonus or not

And there is nothing wrong with that as it is an incentive for all staff towards generating profit and not just sales. But most of the banks haven't made any profit. Andrew

    bonus or not

Agreed. Except that I would love to know what targets some of these senior executives were given where they can bring the company and the entire banking system to its knees and still meet those targets. I can understand it for employees in the branch where targets will be based on things like...

But changing a rewirable fuse (as opposed to changing the fuse box) is not covered by Part P is it? Andrew

    Workshop Electrics

What about something like this? http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/ ... index.html If it is on the non-RCD side of the main CU then an earth fault will just trip the local RCD. Only an over-current will trip the main CU. I haven't looked to see whether these are available in any lower...

    Workshop Electrics

How about wiring from the non-RCD side to a seperate 16A RCD by the bandsaw socket. That way you have RCD protection for the bandsaw without too much messing around with the consumer unit, it is easier to reset should it trip and it won't plung the whole workshop into darkness. Andrew

    Any Paint Experts?

At the risk of hijacking this thread but since we are discussing bathroom paints I have similar, but different problem with emulsion on bathroom walls. The house was built in 1948 and the original bathroom was painted in an oil based paint in a rather fetching deep cream to the top of the walls...

Dismantling a Panasonic Cordless Drill Chuck

They do seem to be fairly interchangeable. I seem to get offered a choice of cheapo ones which would probably fit but not have the nice action of the Panasonic, which I love, or the likes of Bosch and Makita which are around the same price. So I think I need to bite the bullet and replace it...

    banking news

Preference shares pay a fixed dividend and must be paid before any other shareholders get a look in. So, if the government has (say) 7% preference shares in a bank and it makes a profit this year the taxpayer will receive 7% of the value of the share as a dividend. If it does not make a profit...

Dismantling a Panasonic Cordless Drill Chuck

I have a Panasonic Cordless Drill/Driver where the one jaw of the chuck is out of sync with the other two. I suspect that there is a spiral controlling the closure and that the errant jaw has jumped the thread. I have managed to remove the chuck but it appears to be a sealed unit. Does anyone...

    a holiday recommendation for Jan09

Depends on your definition of Good. I get the impression that Good weather for most Aussies at the moment (and particularly the farmers) would be rain - and a lot of it.

    metric, imperial, both or neither

I'm interested in why you say that. One of the advantages of imperial measurements is that they evolved from precisely the need to divide things up, hence being predominantly duodecimal (base-12). One foot can be divided into 2, 3, 4 and six while maintaining a whole number of inches. I must...
