Using a dial gauge to set planer knife height

There's a whole wood whisper video on using a gauge to set planer blades.

    Laminated softwood bench tops.

Please leave room for sarcasm ;-)

    Laminated softwood bench tops.

I would have thought one would be better off going for something like this traditional bench, that I would have thought would be fit for purpose for every woodworker out there. Not too expensive either! http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/workshop/bench/below20xl.html

Sounds complicated to me, not everyone find everything so obvious and easy as certain people... what the hell was this post about in the first place :?:

    100 Year Old Italian Machines

Good call on the unknown. These machines are all very smooth, well oiled the saw sliding table and horizontal mortiser work really smoothly. given how massive they are, and that they really are just used for chopping firewood these days... But yes, they are still well looked after. I would...

    100 Year Old Italian Machines

I was visiting a friend of my wife's in the middle of nowhere, and she asked if I would like to see her fathers workshop. I said yes, thinking it was probably just another dusty hole, however here's what i was shown. This equipment belonged to her grandfather and has been in constant service...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

Yes, it could be, however again the type of joinery seems to be irrelevant in many respects. However the design will impact what joinery is possible. Think we should wait and see what 20 to 6 comes up with as a next design ;-)

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

thing with M&T is you can't really do it on panels, unless you do a greene and greene style, and i think the sagging effect would still be there, (based on final design / materials). if you do M&T you either have to add shelves on top, or make sort of floating panels that fit in to your...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

a solid back panel will help. putting a divider on top shelf will help if you use sheet goods, you will need to edge band. using solid wood edge banding that is thicker will also help provide support. The issue of a wide shelf sagging is not really going to come down to joinery. how the top...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

If you wanted to make from sheet goods only, something like this would work. I would dado the central partitions, or screw from top / bottom normally, and then for the shelves/top put pocket holes where i have indicated with arrows (i am not showing how many, just where) they would all be...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

Problem here is that pocket holes will be visible. You probably want dadoes for the dividers, and then M&T for the ends / rails, and then add the "tops". however if you were thinking 3 sheets for the shelves/top and 4 sticks for your legs, not sure how you could attach top/shelves to legs...

Pocket Hole, Buscuit or Dowel Joint

On the other hand, pocket holes are easy and strong, can be totally hidden if done in right place. Lining up and creating joinery can be difficult and frustrating without practise and tools and time and space. eliminating that element can let one focus on design, layout, aesthetics, wood type...

    cantilever sewing box plans

So don't make them angled then ;-) I don't like those angles, it reduces the overall space. this is just the same as the others above, except on legs... my mother in law has one, and it is handy on legs, however a small table will do the trick...

    cantilever sewing box plans

I think the plan is, however as a hobbiest, I encountered many points where i messed up. Fortunately the wood was free. However if i had heard / read / seen some of the lessons to be learned I think I would have done a much faster, better and less stressful job. Still no substitute for on the...

When to replace circular saw blade

Sharpening mine costs me 10 euro per blade, so I simply take them in once every 2 years, that way 40 euro each time, 20 euro a year, seems reasonable. I calculate that to be every 8 hours of cutting time. (5 mins a week actual blade cutting time doesn't seem like a lot, however if you really...

Checking mitre slots for accuracy on table saw

Scheppach ts2020. I believe this is now made in China, not Germany. Hence my ongoing interest in the xcalibur. However the website is our of date and i believe the design has changed, so i want to see it. And the small problem of swmbo.

Checking mitre slots for accuracy on table saw

My slots are different width by about 1.5mm. The depth is different by 3mm. I made runners on the thicknesser, specifically for each (made extra and keep then on hand for when i need them) I put the runners in the slots, screw the table down and then use a card scraper to fine tune. This...
