    Mock ye not !!

"Far too insular" LOL the woodworking media industry is too insular, too narrow, increasingly predictable... I bet P Follansbee would freak you out Mark! too messy too rough too imperfect But-his work has tons of character....which I dont see in much of the allegedly "high end" cabinet...

Fixing loglap to my new shed

Well one thing for sure you wont stop any wood shrinking by putting extra nails in, aint nuttin you can do about it...! At best you will encourage your baords to split I personally would use galvanised nails, although annular are also good (my preference!). I always use swedish gunnebo ones on...

    Mock ye not !!

Thanks for the tip Andy, I never knew that had been done before! I had envisaged a sort of T shaped beam or I beam with a stop at the end similar to what we have on a bench hook, that could drop into the vice...I'll have a look into Mr Ellises book again, I have a copy somewhere, but havent...

    Mock ye not !!

Mind, Jacob asked a perfectly reasonable question-if flatness is so crucial, then how DO you deal with a rough board, (which is never going to conveniently present itself with a nice ready made perfect flat face to place on a flat bench, for planing to thickness).. If it IS so important to have...

    Weapon of choice

I got one of those, off ebay about 7 years ago, it came with a thick iron, which does take and keep a good edge. I have it working really really well now. It is a delight to use it (any excuse) Another favourite is a "new old stock" razee marples jack off of ebay again, probably 40 to 50 years...

    Mock ye not !!

LOL someone was ticked off, (I imagine, I might be wrong?), because Mr Sellers, who has very well developed, time served skills, was able to do a mundane task quickly and efficiently, without it becoming a nerve wracking time consuming quuasi-religious existential endurance test. Much like...

    Lucky or what!

Just the blast of mud and gravel is enough to sweep the car sideways! I think the most terrifying bit-for the driver at any rate-is around the 28 second mark, when the stone (which he or she can probably clearly see at that point) looks like it might just still have enough speed left in it to...

A handtool epiphany – all thanks to Norm Abram

LOL at the moment I am well under way building a 3 legged cricket table from redwood, just using a few hand tools (dividers, square, axe, scrub plane, jack plane, jointer plane, tenon saw, mortice chisel) something I wanted to do for a long while but kept putting it off, presuming that the...

    Lignum Vitea/hornbeam??

Does any one know a source of supply for Lignum Vitea or Horn beam timber? I am looking for small planks 2 to 3 inches wide, 1/2 inch thick, 9 inch long minimum. I have never used these timbers before, what are they like for working with, glueing up etc? cheers Jonathan :)

    Mock ye not !!

Is your bench as flat as an engineers surface plate (AAA) or better? If its not your fighting a losing battle, and your illusion of flatness is unobtainable. #-o Why not simply operate a CNC machine instead?

You dont get invited to make furniture for the White House if your a mdf and kreg pocket hole merchant....

    Mock ye not !!

Credit to Mr Sellers, he is on a mission to get woodworking back to its basics of developing essential hand tool skills, not being overly reliant on machinery, and it being a fun, rewarding and creative activity. I think he deserves particular credit for attempting to get youngsters involved in...

    Mock ye not !!

I think a lot depends on wether you see woodworking as an activity which attempts to mimic precision engineering (still using hand tools)-becoming "clever" enough to acheive CNC type tolerances by hand. Or wether it is something looser intuitive and more expressive. How "precise" does something...

    Mock ye not !!

The irony is that the more looser and "care-less" (worry free, not careless) the easier it became, and in fact despite the rapid speed, the blade never dug in once, either doing a normal flat bevel, or the convex bevel (yes the rounded bevel worked with that particular stone as well the same as...

    Condesation problems in kitchen

do the tenant empty the water out of the tank on a regular basis? Sounds daft, but that might be an issue, they soon fill up. (unless its plumbed directly ito a drain of course..)

    Mock ye not !!

LOL Only today, I looked at the damned waterstone, in its wooden box stand. It is the hardest of my collection, probably 1500 grit? Not sure. Anyway I soaked it up for 10 minutes  Then had a go with it. The difference today being my attitude to that stone was what the #### I've got...

    Plate Glass Flatness

Toughened glass is not flat. The float glass (which is "flat"-whatever that means to the individual in a mathematical, philosophical or metaphysical sence), is heated up with a furnace until it starts to glow, by which time it is soft like toffee. It runs back and forth over fireproof ceramic...

Replacing woodburner in sitting room. Doable?

If you want a woodburning stove that is safe, fuel-efficient and worry free, it is best to get a qualified installer who has to take responsibility for their work. I have seen only too graphically the results of a diy installation gone wrong. The entire house burned down because the tight wad...

    Stripping acrylic varnish

I honestly think nitromors is an expensive relatively inneffective product..... Hudson is correct, card scarpers are a reliable way. I did the same task just yesterday on some ikea components that are being recycled into various wooden clamps and other tools. I used a scraper I made from an old...
