Small workshop alternative to a Planer Thicknesser

Or you could get tipped right over the edge and do it how P Follasbee does it? (You mentioned using logss off the tree surgeon.) http://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/hand-tools-green-wood/

    The unedited John Brown

What statement of fact??  The comment he made was an opinion, hes just uncomfortable when it gets challenged, and wants to shut it down "because its political theory" This is nothing more than the bog standard old chestnut that people (usually middle class) churn out to try to...

Sorry old cheshirechap, but when you start to talk about the high value of so called "enlightened patronage" etc etc, then you are entering the realms of political theory yourself..... If you dont see that you are perhaps a bit naive.

Have a look at this Jacob!

Has anyone ever stopped to think about the old childhood games such as cup in a ball, hoop and stick etc, very good at developing hand/eye coordination, which is the basis of all manual skill in crafts and trades

Can't get my battery charger to elctrolysise

LOL Put it this way, the brown liquid/gunk by product wont harm a grass lawn, so it cant be too bad....I found that included caustic soda electrolyte as well as washing soda. I find it to be an inexact science so to speak, sometimes it works fast, sometimes it is slow. Also, I seldom got...

Can't get my battery charger to elctrolysise

If you are stripping rust the residues (rust/grease/soot/paint/coal/oil etc) are attracted to the anode (+), so if you got the wires the right way theres no danger of getting zinc or any other metal onto the item you are stripping (connected to _). It would only happen if the wires were the...

Have a look at this Jacob!

Despite that possibility, there is the fact that, normally, children develop-physically, emotionally, intellectually, socially etc etc. "Developmental milestones" I think is the sociologists industry term these days. Maybe B Wiggins DID need a pair of stabilisers when he was little, its...

    Mahogany balloon backs

The "Ironmongers" that time will not forget J H ADAMS

I just looked at Gary's slide show, it must be highly unusual to see a collection of old buildings like that in London thesse days. No doubt hackney council are happy, the site will presumably be razed and redeveloped into yet more inane offices or retail units or whatever? Any way, it reminded...

    Chair making

Theres the whole point. It takes a hefty investment of time and practise to develop manual skills, particularly in a present day culture which is in many ways dismissive of or hostile to the notion of manual work. It seems to be the case that modern day people get impatient, and want instant...

    Chair making

The thing with the woodwork trade and industry/media people is they want you to get the gadgets they promote. The thing with a tennon cutter is that the only thing it will do is cut tennons. Less is more. Its not a versatiil tool like an axe, draw knife, a spokeshave or even a puukko knife is...

Have a look at this Jacob!

I have the stone inset into a wooden box, it sits across the bench snugly inside the tool well, so it wont move. To do a draw knife I hold the handles-with the edge facing away from me (not towards me as it would be in normal use). I hone either side of the blade, takes less than 1 minute, quick...

Have a look at this Jacob!

LOL just imagine if the "sharpening is difficult" mentality was applied to bike riding...thered be gangs of middle aged men in tight lycra suits all riding on the pavement, with little kiddie stabilisers on their bikes, "because its too difficult to ride a bike safely without them......"

Have a look at this Jacob!

=D> How ever did the colonial pioneers and the subsequent generations of American furniture makers ever manage without this kit? Jacob is right, its all lies. The industry trend is to keep pushing the notion that sharpening is hard to do, ergo you need to consider purchasing these gizmo's we...

    Need some roofing help.

You could possibly reduce the roof height by 6 or 8 inches, enough to allow a regular unconcealed gutter and down spout on the house (bungalow?) and then have the shed roof re-pitched opposite to what it is now, to drain to the left (in the pics) with a regular gutter and down spout outside...
