    Flexcut Woodcarving Tools

Hi folks, Does anyone have any knowledge of these tools? I have a few of the more traditional types of woodcarving chisels, but was looking at these as being pretty useful. They'd only really be used for carving missing detail in furniture restoration, none of your decoy ducks etc! Thanks

Joint suggestions for heavy Victorian table base rebuild?

Go for mortise and tenons. Theres a good reason that they are called "traditional" if done properly they'll last far longer than anything else. The trouble with the dovetail idea is, as you say, cutting them on site. Theres also the fact that unless the tails are quite long to extend deep into...

    Sharpening Spirits

sxlalan, I've tried this before (theres a post i did/contributed too on it and cleaning DMT's a fair while back). Mineral spirit = white spirit Works fine, if anything a little bit coarser cutting action than if you use water (not sure why). Also means you can't leave the stone wet and suffer...

    Tennis Elbow

Steve, I've had this on and off for a few years. Used to be really bad in my left arm. I the end i went to the doc and had a cortisone injection into the elbow (hurt like hell about an hour later and couldn't use that arm from then til the end of the next day. But once all that pain went away...

white bloom on black table top

Ah, come on Terry , it's great pouring meths over someones deeply cherished table and then lighting a match next to it  The expression on their faces  just like this! Great if it works, but experience tells you when you'll get away with it and how many attempts you'll get away...

    Workbenches - correct height

A certain Mr Luckhurst advises on his courses that the workbench should be at a height where as a man you could rest your (you can guess) on it's surface without too much discomfort    He even provides blocks to go under the bench to achieve this (not that you're expected to...

    E-Bay scam

nope, wireless not used (well only for radio 2  ). No bog standard PC. Surely if i just deleted alleged security check then they wouldn't have been able to link with it, would they?? Have now run security checks on my software set ups and PC is invisible to the net. Have installed 5...

    E-Bay scam

I did have one of those security check  emails a while back when i logged into E-bay, 1st filled it in with obscenities, then decided not to send it and just deleted it. Surely that wouldn't give them a keyway? It wouldn't be so bad if i could identify how this happened. According to ISP...

    E-Bay scam

Never used internet other than through my own, home PC. Key logger / spyware was 1st thought (thats why installed software from Microsoft that's supposed to find/stop it) no sign of anything. Firewall is also supposed to counteract this sort of thing. Got me beat as to how it's happened.

    E-Bay scam

The Norton set up i have is Norton Internet Security 2004, updated to 2005. Thats firewall, antivirus etc.etc. And yes it's updated automatically and regularly as is the Windows XP via microsoft. It looks as though they used the available info on E-bay and copied it across and changed the...

    E-Bay scam

Hi folks, Just wanted to warn all you E-bayers of a scam that i got caught up in. I received a phone call out of the blue from a chap who had purchased an Aiybo electronic dog (£800  ) and wanted to check details re postage. I told him i didn't know what he was on about and so he told...

Best finish for table with breadboard ends

Breadboard ends are a finishing problem due to the fact you have opposing grains (they don't tell you that in all the instructions on how to make them!). If it didn't split the finish then it wouldn't be moving, so there'd be no point in going to the trouble of the breadboard end in the first...

    What finish for Walnut ?

If i were going to the expense of fitting granite tops i'd be using solid timber. MDF is not really suitable for a bathroom environment due to the damp. If you stick with MDF you're going to have to seal it very well, so i'd go for spray finish. Are you going to put solid lippings on the cut...

    Limed Oak

I had to make up part of a frame for a frame and panelled Oak kitchen door recently and used Liberon liming wax. It's a pretty straightforward process. You go over the piece with a bronze wire brush to clear out the grain then apply the liming wax (basically a white wax) give it a while to dry...

Sale of goods act / credit cards

Just to finalise this a bit and pass on a bit of info. My machine was a Hammer C3-31 last seasons colour i.e. blue. It was new December last year. Since then Hammer have updated their range - now burgundy and grey. They've changed the fence for the planer etc. to a flat design more like the...

Kity 1619 table saw on ebay.

Not a bad bargain. I sold one of these about a year ago and got around £900 on E-bay. It was about the same age (at that time Kity were doing a special deal on the package at around £1,100). I always found the sliding carriage and the fence adjustment a bit stiff. The side extension table drops...

    Off to Ashford I go

I've done several of Bruce's short courses (cab. 1 + 2, wood buying and drying) as well as his one year intensive restoration course (no longer available). Great way of brushing up on skills and learning do things right first time around. The short courses are very well presented, by a very...
