    Harvesting wood by myself

Thanks for all the eucalyptus advice. It’s a helluva tree to bring down given its proximity to houses, neighbours gardens etc so a professional tree man will do it. He will likely want first call on the wood; if it was a quality timber I’d try and rescue some but it seems a gamble and sadly I...

    Harvesting wood by myself

Apologies for muscling in on someone else’s thread with a query. My daughter is having a huge, and I mean huge 40ft+ eucalyptus tree cut down in her new garden. Is this timber of any value? What might it be used for?

    Blocking mice?

And if this buzzard happened upon a poisoned rat or mouse .... one less buzzard :( . Don’t use poison, use traps and wire wool. And I’m speaking as someone who discovered a leaking plastic water pipe in my kitchen caused by a nibbling mouse!!

    Useful knots to learn.

I shall have to drag my knot tying books out of the dim recesses and get practising again. The problem I have is that I’m largely left handed and knot instructions are forthe right handed. I need ‘The Left Hander’s Guide to Knots’.

Barn shed design - opinions sought - madness! Talk me out of it!

What are you doing about the floor and about possible flooding? Asking because our soon to be replaced shed is in a similar location.

    Kitchens

A very quick comment on worktops - we have slimline (22mm deep) laminate worktops in ‘carrera marble’ finish which fool visitors into thinking they are the real thing they touch them. And they were less than half the price of course. Our dark grey diy-kitchens units with these tops look the...

    Bathroom panelling / wainscoting

I’ve used the blue MDF for panelling in several bathrooms over the years and never had a problem. By contrast, softwood t&g is a nightmare of cupping and shrinking and knots which can bleed through even when pre treated.

Best place to buy kitchens in the uk.

I was very impressed with this lot - DIY Kitchens | Discount Kitchens, Doors & Cheap Kitchen Units carcasses come made up with doors fitted - none of this flat pack stuff. Order it all on-line (which means you have to remember all the bits and pieces), good support and after sales. Been in a...

What is your favorite American TV show?

S ch itt’s Creek* (Netflix) is our latest favourite - just watching it through for a second time. (If you haven’t tried it, Episode 1 is bad - typical shouty American humour - but it just gets steadily better.) Manages to be funny and heartwarming - and not violent, a requirement of the boss...

    China

I haven’t followed this thread closely but to just chuck my tuppence worth in: it’s an easy target to say that kids today do easy and pointless degrees and should do more ‘with their hands’ or study ‘relevant’ subjects. But just what is relevant - less than 20 years ago there was barely an...

    NAIL GUN

I’ve got a Ryobi and a matching jigsaw. The nail gun is quite heavy but I use the small capacity batteries both came with (from SGS) rather than a big heavy one which helps a lot. I did pinch the missus’ big charger that came with her strimmer which recharges them quickly - and the gun does a...

    Kitchen worktops

Worktop Express very good - I found the online bespoke design service good for getting a curved corner cut to my spec. A few years ago a previous worktop from them split along a glue line after cutting a hob hole. They collected it, completely recut a replacement, oiled and returned with 3-4...

    Insulated Shipping Container Help

Based on steel boat experience, I’d agree with you - that’s why most use Sprayfoam straight onto the steel these days. I’ve just stripped out an old boat with very well applied polystyrene boards and it was remarkable how much damp and rust had still got behind them. if the only evidence of...

Warped wooden worktop - any solution?

Thanks for all the advice. How was it stored? Cut to length and width then sealed with two, maybe three coats of Danish oil each side and at least four on edges. Haven’t done any cut-outs for hob and sink yet. They have been sat on the kitchen units and covered with those black corrugated...

Warped wooden worktop - any solution?

I bought a couple of iroko wood block worktops a few weeks ago, trimmed them to size, sealed all round with several coats of Danish oil then left them on the kitchen units unsecured over maybe two weeks around Christmas. Just gone back to the job and both are bowing significantly across the...

    Best Bicycle lock

Locks and chains are heavy and awkward to carry if you’re out on casual rides - one of these makes a very handy ‘coffee stop lock’ to secure a bike against the casual thief while you’re round the corner buying a Mars bar. A sort of giant cable tie basically...

    Game Changing Tools

A Makita compound mitre saw. I’ve always been pretty rubbish at hand sawing (still am TBH) so woodworking was pretty low on my DIY skills list but this gave me the confidence to do major jobs on house renovations and refit a completely burnt out canal boat into something others thought...
