    Good experience with BT Openreach

Driving through floodwaters and in driving rain we saw an unfortunate Openreach bloke with a handful of cables fixing a fault. Anyone who does that job in that weather deserves all the praise they can gather.

    Parkside tools

Aldi sells stuff direct on-line that isn’t necessarily in the stores. Lidl doesn’t but you can get tools and spares from them like this: https://www.kompernass.com/en/power-tools/

    Advice on rotting shed

If you’re wanting cheap wood for sheds and such like just keep a look out on Facebook Marketplace - round our way people are always selling off cuts of ply, left over 3x2 etc etc. Cheap as chips. And don’t go to B&Q. Overpriced and poor quality. Go to a timber yard.

    "Vanity" breadboard ends

Out of curiosity what was the ‘faker Shaker’ construction you spoke of in the OP? Sounds like it might suit a novice like me.

    Good News Re Worktop Express

I found them brilliant - I bought an iroko top a couple of years back, trimmed it all, cut a hob hole, arrived back on the job the next day and found it had split apart on the glue line! They sent a van that day, collected it and within a couple of days returned me a replacement all cut and...

    Gorilla glue

I close the top with a screw - use a progressively fatter one as I hack more off the filler. I can twist it out with pliers. Once open I prop upside down over something until the stuff starts to ooze out. Too expensive to waste! PS what is recommended as a cheaper alternative? I find this...

What's the most stupid thing you've done in woodworking?

I was putting down some chipboard flooring in a bedroom of a house we were renovating. The end of one sheet was temporarily hanging over the open stairwell. ‘Careful you don’t step on that’ I warned wife and kids. Ten minutes later....🤣🤣 Result of my short cut downstairs was all the bones across...

quality of redwood pine degrading + price increasing.

When you look at the trees being grown and felled it’s no surprise the timber is so ****. This in Highlands.

    Imperial vs Metric

Oh yes I remember Barry Hardboard on tv from my youth. The butchery on our place was largely hidden under chipboard floors (how I hate those!) where joists had been attacked by plumbers and electricians seemingly working with hatchets and chainsaws. And had anyone invented the spirit level in...

    Imperial vs Metric

Our present house - Victorian with ‘60s renovations (more like butchery) - seems to have been worked on without the aid of a tape measure, metric or otherwise. And on the older timber frame places I’ve done sheet sizes were the least of my problems;) But glad to learn that Europeans don’t...

    Imperial vs Metric

It has always amused me that metric timber and sheet sizes seem to be exactly converted from the old Imperial equivalent (2440 x 1220 being 8’ x 4’ etc). Does this apply in Europe too where the Imperial conversion has no logic?

    Imperial vs Metric

Don’t forget the ‘through the Paris Meridian’ bit. As usual we have to blame the French who decided that everything measurable In the universe should be neatly dIvisible by 1000. Them and their revolution, eh. The rest of us were perfectly happy with our rods, poles and perches.

Tracksaw, Bandsaw or Table saw (yet again)

I’m strictly an amateur but I do work in a very confined space - a boat. My Dewalt table saw is a great tool - the rack & pinion fence is accurate to a mm and makes repeatable cuts and small size changes easy. Its only limitation is that it has a small table and is therefore not ideal for...

Looking for recommendations to buy a decent portable/foldable workbench

After my plastic Stanley trestles fell apart (useless things) i bought a pair of Axminster Tools foldable and height adjustable metal ones that were on offer. Like others they have slots to hold 3x2 timber and make a bench. Been great. I also have a Keter fold up plastic table which is ok but...

What should my next powertool spend be?

Thanks for all the great advice. I guess my first move is to learn some sharpening skills then practise my jigsawing. Only after that some power tool shopping.

What should my next powertool spend be?

Thisis pretty much what I did with my motley collection of tools and a supply of chisels that I'm afraid I steadily wrecked and replaced. The rooflight was built by a proper joiner and the back cabin was largely okay but all the rest was done with oak veneered ply and solid oak framing (made...

What should my next powertool spend be?

Thanks for all the comments. In answer to various queries - I have a cheap jigsaw and TBH it seems as good/bad as others I've tried. Maybe part of the problem may be trying to curve cut thicker (9 - 12mm ply), the other part is probably operator error. I do use a circular saw with a clamped...
