    CamVac query ...

OK ... feeling much better about this now ... maybe it's luck or coincidence the cap has stayed on this long ... a long hose to my neighbours living room can't be that expensive ... ! Thanks everyone!

    CamVac query ...

Been over it very carefully. It is sucking just fine - all the hoses etc clear - and just cleaned up a lot of shavings and dust just fine from an afternoon in the workshop making stool legs on the lathe. It's the outflow - seems stronger than before. I gaffer-taped the outlet cap down and it...

    CamVac query ...

I've had a little CamVac CV286 extractor which has worked well for dust gathering when sanding on the lathe as well as collecting chippings off the router table ... and is excellent for clearing up chippings, shavings, dust etc as a vaccum cleaner. It still works well for these purposes ... but...

    Shaping a chair seat

Heh, no, it worked really well. Right hand on the body of the grinder for main control forward/back and side/side. String around grinder handle held by left hand, with thumb pressure on loop of string giving me a subtle amount of elevation/lowering. Tried it out on an old bit of blockboard...

    Shaping a chair seat

That's helpful - thanks for the link Tom - might make that jig, but think trying out the arbotech on some scrap could be a first line ... might also try the idea I found on a thread of hanging it from a line on the ceiling to get a controlled curve and limited depth of cut ... Went to David C's...

    Wizer poll?

It happens sadly all too often around here - planned stuff can easily get knocked by the unplannable onslaught of emergencies ... road crashes, tumours and the like have no respect for waiting lists. Hope they find you a slot in the next few days, after psyching yourself up ...

    Shaping a chair seat

I bought an elm seatblank to make a traditional-ish sort of carved seat (not got a bandsaw ... yet ...ordered one!) which I've started to work on. Planed the top and bottom smooth to see the grain and decide which side will be which - no problems. I've planned to a Veritas pullshave to carved...

    Dust masks/respirator

I have the Powercap Lite IP ... did have problems with the electrics, but they seem to be fixed ... light, quiet, comfortable and effective ... and I have a short beard and glasses ...

    Mortice chisel selection

I was looking for some too - wondered about the Ray Isles, but a lot of money for something I'm not sure I'll use that much - going for something cheaper (yes, I know I may end up buying the quality option later, but thought I'd see how much I used them in reality) ... CI Fall ones from Workshop...

    ...another youtube video....

Thanks for the video inspiration - messed about this afternoon and made a pegboard with 3 pegs ... either for the spare bedroom or might end up as a Xmas present ... No picture yet so it hasn't happened - it's clamped up at the moment - will post one though ...

    Scrubs up nicely

Just got hold of a scrub plane after reading reviews and the like ... and wow! What a beast. To try it out, pulled out a split beech log from the firewood pile, took of about a cms thickness to roughly flatten the split surface and get rid of the heartwood pith ... then took the jointer too it...

    Furniture Exhibition in Yorkshire

It was Richards post here at the top of this thread that drew my attention - I tried the idea out on my better half who agreed it might be a good morning out (and enjoyed the auction that went on there as an additional brownie point) - very glad it got posted here as hadn't come across it...

    Making Toy Wheels

I made 4 for a toy truck (now given away, and no pictures to show, so it didn't actually happen ...) - rough spindle turned a rectangular block into a 6cms diameter cylinder, then parted one end down to make a dovetailed spigot so I could get a firm hold in some jaws in the chuck. Mounted there...

    Northern contemporary furniture exhibition

Had a very inspiring day out there today - fantastic craftmanship, some very impressive and interesting work. Highly recomended ...

    Furniture Exhibition in Yorkshire

Been there today - very impressed by some of the designs (not convinced by a few, but there's room for everything) and even more impressed by the craftmanship on show ... both inspiring and disheartening for the hobbyist who's skills are orders of magnitude away. A good day out - recomended for...

    "Sealing" windows?

This isn't woodworking exactly - but it's related ... I'm doing up my wooden french windows - including cutting out a rotten section of the rain sill and replacing it - and repainting. Having sanded away all the loose paint etc, I'm down to bare wood on all the lower surfaces. There doesn't...

    'Turning' suppliers in t'North

I would agree that Snaintons is worth a trip, but when it's well on the way to the east coast, it's hardly "on the way" to the north west! I'd also agree that Boddy's isn't worth a special detour - I've got some stuff from there but tend to come away disappointed at what they had on offer...

    Sanding questions

Thanks for those ideas - I tried the soft arbour I use for the inside of bowls, and it was OK for the simpler/flatter contours but cut an edge into more complex curves. I'd not seen the abrasive flap wheels - managed to find one (fairly coarse) and got better results - good for the clean-up -...

    Sanding questions

I'm making a large mirror on request, and have a couple of novice queries ... It's made of ash, and I've kept the waney edges. I want to sand these smooth and clean. I can't think of a power tool that will help - is doing it by hand with Abranet held over a soft pad so it'll follow the contours...

If you decided to go north up the A1 to the M62 before heading west, you could call in at Turners Retreat as it's only 5 minutes from the Bawtry roundabout
