To buy old saws or new? Is the question.

There's a lot to be said for the build quality and materials of old tools (e.g. Saws and planes). The catch is being prepared to fettle them back to health. So yes, you could get them professionally done, or there are plenty of guides on filing and setting teeth to be able to restore it...

    *Small* electric screwdriver?

If it's just for the odd job I just grab my 150mm hex extension - cheaper than a new tool and won't wear out!

    Brilliant, thank you!

    Belt mounted respirators

Not sure how best to describe them but I mean the powered respirator units with the intake worn on your belt at the back. I'm rapidly turning my Saffir S300 respirator into triggers broom and I'm running out of spares despite having plenty of filters. That combined with for some reason seeming...

Drawers - how do you rabbet yours?

Never expected it to lead to this sort of discussion, loads of food for thought thanks all :)

    Recommended size for new workshop

As big as you can go! As a comparison, I've got a 6x6 workshop with lathe, mitre saw, table saw with outriggers, planer/thicknesses, bandsaw, workbench. That fills the space up pretty completely. For what you describe I reckon 5x5 will be fine, however I'd echo the other sentiments here to...

Best way to mount router fence to TS fence

Afternoon all! I've finally got my router wing built into my table saw and I'm really pleased with the whole setup. The only finishing touch required is making the router fence an easily removable addition to my table saw fence. So, what am I working with (see pictures). It's an AUK router...

    Eye opening experience

As I understand it the same protection which is brilliant for small businesses through the use of Ltd company constructs is the same approach that allows these fraudsters to operate with such confidence. No idea how you counter it other than educating Joe public that they need to research...

Electrical advice - how ‘backyard’ is my solution?

Whilst there a few different bits of advice given in this thread which I know contributers will have different opinions on I think you're getting a clear message here - don't mess unless you know what you're doing. As had been said, if it's lightweight block then you can just scrape the recess...

Electrical advice - how ‘backyard’ is my solution?

From what you've described I'd without doubt just make the back box deeper. It's an extremely easy job makes minimal mess an can be completed in 20minutes by a novice. As always ensure you've killed the breaker for that circuit before messing with it.

Vfd vs dps vs new motor help

I'd vote for DPC if you're contemplating future machines. The 3ph are nearly always cheaper due to the issues with people having supply in the second hand market. VFD you're just making a one-off cost for one machine. To me that's the worst of both worlds - faff of setting it up plus additional...

    Thicknessing - lunchbox vs P/T

Intrigued about this one... I've got a restored Cooksley P/T, absolute lump of heavy old kmachinery and does a fab job of planing that I could only ever improve with a helical which I'm not bothering with. I've also spent a bunch of time and effort setting up the thicknessing aspect, and ended...

Cyclone + Festool MIDI for Makita 2012nb planer

Have I done it? No. But from a theory perspective I don't see it working - small vacs work on low volume high pressure approach whereas extractors move high volume at low pressure to shift chips. So the small vac isn't going to shift the volume of air needed unfortunately.

Any plumbers? Am I out of touch?

Be surprised if you get any change from £100 for supply and fit with a cheap mixer.

Why is this dangerous kit being advertised on here?

Personally I think the debate on which aids are more/less safe is of far less importance than just ensuring people have the basic safety principles instilled into them - how they then apply them is personal responsibility if outside of a commercial environment. E.g. No loose clothing or hair...

Drawers - how do you rabbet yours?

Making some heavy duty drawer units at the minute for the back of our pickup and whilst I appreciate the difference between various joints (dovetail, mitre, etc) I can't say I've ever applied any science to how I do rabbet. I typically do mine as 50/50 cuts, i.e. I set the router depth and...
