    Nail finder

Ouch! It happens more than you might think. I don't do anything like a serious amount but a season won't go by without it happening once or twice. If it happens when you are milling it's a real PITA, 'cos the chains are longer that the ones you typically use for felling and bucking. I bet...

    Nail finder

Brand new blade, they'll find any metal faster than anything. Seriously I've never had a lot of luck with them, probably 'cos I got a cheapie and gave up. I can usually tell if it's rough stuff from inspection, and I don't put anything dodgy through the machine. It's the blasted staples that...

    Sash window cill repair

Worked for me well enough. 8 years and still fine. If/when it does fail I'll be OK with the time spent/time gained equation.

How do you hold your hammer?

Cant day I’d ever use a hammer with an extended forefinger. I think that’d just feel weird! A saw? Definately. Files and chisels? Sometimes. Never a hammer tho. Maybe i’ll try it and see. but if I belt my thumb it’s your fault! :)

    How much?

Yeah, £300 is certainly not expensive, but whether the customer will see it that way in an age when many attach little value to hand craft is the question. Some will, some won‘t. including a card with some back story about the making of it, where the wood came from, the makers bio, who it...

    Sash window cill repair

An old, but vaguely sharp saw and old vaguely sharp chisel to cut out an elongated wedge (apparently called a trapezoidal isosceles - try saying that after a few) containing the rotten part. Paint on several of coats of wood preservative. Cut a piece to match, its OK to make it slightly...

    At the end - always.

    UV protection for garden furniture

I'd have trouble recommending Osmo TBH. It seems to take forever to dry. I suspect it's something I am doing wrong, but on some bench slats it took weeks - genuinely. Even on a door frame it was a week. Air seasoned Oak in both cases. I don't think I'll be giving it another go. It does...

    How Close To Edge?

Late to the party, sorry. But I'd be very tempted to drill and either use resin to fix a stud or drill and stick in a concrete screw or bolt. It would depend what was nearest to hand. Either will hold the shelf whatever you could realistically want to put on it. You can go quite close to the...

Wooden unit in a bathroom - possible or mad?

Hi, I used cherry faced moisture resistant MDF. I have a vacuum press so I veneered it myself. You may be able to find it online but it might be a search. Normal veneered MDF is easier to come by and would do. You can veneer MDF yourself as long as it's not too large a bit. Google "how...

Wooden unit in a bathroom - possible or mad?

I did something a while back. I used moisture resistant (not waterproof!) veneered MDF. The core was coloured green IIRC. Stuck together with biscuits and PU glue and finished with a few coats of 2 part lacquer polished to a gloss finish. Not a natural material in sight - but it looked good!

    Machinery/ tool dilemma

Yeah, I guess I'm lucky to have the space for a baby panel saw with a decent sliding table. It won't take full sheets but half sheets are OK. I do use quite a lot of sheet material - veneered ply/MDF etc. I don't have a track saw (maybe that's the problem :) ) so panels get rough cut with a...

Is pressurised hot water worth it, with oil?

As ajb and spectric, pressurised cylinder and standard (or system) oil boiler. I‘m pretty sure some megaflows (and similar alternatives) come with secondary coils for other heat sources, eg electric, solar, wood etc. Unfortunately i can see the day when electric or biomass are the only...

    Machinery/ tool dilemma

I dont think i could do without either to be honest. I guess if I really really had to I’d lose the saw. But the bandsaw and everything else would go before those two!

    Electric chainsaw experience

Wow, thats getting to be a serious option. I might have to change my mind about battery saws  thanks.

Router table with built in motor

Mike, genuine question. You have both the lumberjack and the ujk, which puts you in a better position to comment on the price/quality equation than most of us. Can you give us some insights? Will the lumberjack really do what the ukj will. Or is there a point when the ukj pulls ahead. and...

    Electric chainsaw experience

Ouch, that price hurts! Should come down tho...hopefully. :) It does look a serious bit of kit Mind me asking what you use it for, how long do get from it and how long does a charge take?

Advice on Kitchen Cabinet Furniture Doodads

Had a bit of left over marble so I made up an under counter pull out shelf with a set of really heavy duty full extension slides. (Workshop ones not kitchen ones. You could stand on it in theory. ) Unfortunately it wasn't actually a lot of use - it blunted knives, couldn't take spills, and...

Using Melamine Chipboard as a Whiteboard

LOL! I have the same problem, except I write it down on a bit of scrap which then invariably gets used as a clamp pad. And of course I put the numbers next to the wood. So next time I get some white chipboard I'm nicking your idea!
