If this thread goes much further we'll have the bomb squad down on us. :devilish:

    Dangers of Wire wool

Its often a wonder how boys ever make it out of childhood alive. Looking back I have no idea how i did. The incident with the bottle of ether (best not to ask), the biscuit barrel, spark plug, coil and battery was only topped by trying to find out how high I could shoot an arrow. It only dawned...

Oak Veneered Ply wood or Mdf

They didn’t happen to have a load of veneered MDF but no ply did they? :) I often veneer my own panels and I can’t say I’ve found that one is much harder than the other. Maybe its different for mass production?

    Help choosing circular saw

Of course you are absolutely right on a practical level. I was just thinking back to a gift I was given 30 years ago. A set of boxwood handled marples chisels That are still with me today. I‘ll often pick them and remember past times with the person who gave them to me. I’m not sure a...

Oak Veneered Ply wood or Mdf

Couple of thoughts. I‘m pretty sure 18mm is fairly normal for decent quality Wardrobe carcassing, although 15mm is used on cheaper stuff. The carcass strength comes from the structure - leave the back off and it'll collapse in a flash! 18mm become 19mm (& 15 becomes 16mm) when veneered -...

0000 wire wool thats been used for applying a wax top coat is even more fun for your budding pyromaniac. Ask me how i know!

    Help choosing circular saw

Just a different thought.... £250 is a funny price point for a circular saw. It‘s too much for a perfectly serviceable joinery saw - the sort of thing you’d build a shed with, and not enough for the top flight cabinets makers saws. Its kinda bullet proof trade territory. if he’s just...

Wooden unit in a bathroom - possible or mad?

Yep, and they made those funny sailing thingies out of wood for millenia. And the malt i‘ll be sipping later spent a good few years in a wooden barrel too. :)

advice on neighbours smoke from chimney issue

Which you are free to do. However at the moment tho the arbiters of such things take the view that bonfires in the country are acceptable within reason. Personally I hope it remains so.

advice on neighbours smoke from chimney issue

I dont know the circumstance so I cant comment on an individual case. But it is worth pointing out thar there are sometimes two sides to a neighbourhood dispute story. A neighbour complained to the council about me due to the constant noise from my leaf blower and constant nuisance from the...

Which make of glove to wear in the workshop?

Standard “builders” gloves at just under a quid a pop online for rough timber. Otherwise no gloves

planer or thicknesser first or planer thicknesser?

When its the best option yeah. It depends how important your time is to you I guess. I mean, some weirdos even use hand tools just because they want to. :)

Heating a vacuum press for veneering

The airpress is good, but I dont use mine much for large panels because veneered ply or MDF is a lot less hassle. For smaller bookmatched stuff its great. I must admit I use titebond. I’ve never needed the airpress glue.

advice on tools for timber framing.

This is probably going to sound barking, but if you have access to a small chainsaw you can fit a carving bar to it and plunge cut. You do need to be comfortable using a chainsaw, but a carving bar (small diameter tip) and low kickback chain is not nearly as hairy as it sounds. having said all...

planer or thicknesser first or planer thicknesser?

Ditto. It’ll bit slower using a thicknesser as a jointer all the time but it’ll work well enough. Ive done it often with boards that are too long for my jointer

    Felt shingles? Any opinions?

I stuck decent quality felt shingles on the tractor shed about 7 years ago and they are still spot on so I'm pretty sure you'll be OK with your choice. I got a 200mm(ish) wide roll of the same colour shingle material from the same place that supplied the shingles (roofing superstore IIRC) and...

What can I do with this Cherry tree?

I think there is a woodturners club up near there. A google might turn it up. Offer it to them?
