    Land rover

The defender? You certainly need a sense of humour to run one, also pretty decent mechanical skills and a friendly chiropractor. AA membership helps too. TBH I think they've become a bit too fashionable and overpriced. My first encounter with one was as a 12 or 13 year old on my godfathers...

    Damp in garage wall

Sorry, my confusingly poor choice of terminology. in the garage example i was thinking of the walls were Only single brick thick but done as two seperate leaves tied together with ties (i sincerely hope!). so in practice it was a wall with a tiny cavity. I have no idea why, or even how it was...

    Damp in garage wall

Good question ttrees! Its why i asked what the construction was. If its only that one wall that is damp then it may be just be ventilation thats keeping the damp at bay. One of the driest garages I ever saw was only single brick, but must have had a really clear gap between the inner and outer...

Advice on repairing rotten door jambs

As per Pety83. For a couple of years I doubt the joint would matter. But having said that a scarf is just as easy. A good soaking of wood preservative on the end grain, if you have any, and it will easily last for the time you need. if you can get an accurate 45 mitre with a multitool you...

    Damp in garage wall

Youve got your work cut out trying to do that by hand. I think you are on the right track buy creating a gap, esp if its only that one wall thats damp. That suggests that the slab rather than a lack of damp proofing Is a lot of the problem. how thick is the garage wall? Half or single brick? i...

    Forstner bits

Hi ttrees, those look like the real CMT. I googled and scott and sergeant are doing the same set At about the same price. That boosts confidence. They look to be on special offer. Def worth a punt

    Forstner bits

Assuming that they are genuine, and that cmt haven’t gone all cheap and nasty with a cut price range then bite their arm off! Is that a special offer or something? Im tempted myself, and i don't even need them!

    Forstner bits

CMT make good ones. Pretty expensive tho. I use quite a lot of their stuff, router bits, saw blades as well as forstners. I tend to keep the forstners for the precision stuff. A rabid beaver tied to a long pole is fine for the rough work.

Cutting melamine to shape without chips

Sorry, must read more carefully, just seen that you cant use a power saw in your circumstances. I'll leave the above for others tho.

Cutting melamine to shape without chips

Disinteriors way is good and pretty straight forward. Without detracting from it in any way a couple of other ideas are... A negative rake blade on the saw helps quite a lot. Taking the barest pass over it with saw depth set to the minimum. This is the scoring saw principle that you see...

Looking for recommendations to buy a decent portable/foldable workbench

Blimey, I wasn't far out when I was talking about workmates on antiques roadshow. This is the model I have, and this is the original.

    Anyone use glue film ?

I now have a mental image of custard proceeding to iron a sheet of 8x4 in a slow and stately manner while Roobarb does his level best to disrupt things. (I'm sorry, I know that's not what you meant at all, but the picture just popped into my head!) I get the point about veneering curves...

Looking for recommendations to buy a decent portable/foldable workbench

So true! Mine is about the same age. Totally bullet proof. The Kenwood chef of the jobbing carpenter. I tell ya, they'll be exhibits on antiques roadshow in century or two, and still in daily use .

    Anyone use glue film ?

Tried, once, but never again! (I thought it was just me!) Maybe give to @PetePontoValentino for making giant flytraps?

Workshop floor - how much weight can it take?

That's a big workshop. Lucky you :) You wont go through the floor, that's for sure, but 500mm is quite a big spacing. Too big really I think you'll notice a little bit of bounce but its unlikely to make too much difference with those machines. The ply will almost certainly distort over time...

    Help choosing circular saw

Good luck to your son. It's a horrible time at the moment but it sounds like he is taking the initiative and trying to find a way through. Hope all works out for him. (y)

    Dangers of Wire wool

My father was a county doctor at the time when having a tooth extracted involved the local dentist, the local doctor, a mask and a bottle of ether. Ether, I was told very firmly when I enquired, was flammable and was not to be played with. At about the same time my father dismantled an old...

    Help choosing circular saw

As per DBT85s advice, the Festool TS55 is definitely the one everybody thinks of. Def sound advice, you can't really go wrong with that. The Mafell is an alternative. In my original post I said Metabo, I meant to say Mafell, really sorry. I always get those two confused. I looked it up but...
