    whisky tumbler

The goblets I use at Bodgers gatherings have been sealed with beeswax just as described above. I can confirm that they have been well tested with whisky. And mead. And red wine, beer, and more dodgy distillates than I can go in to here !

    A&e visits

Therein lies the problem. For many of us, there is no other way to get seen by someone after the GP surgery closes. They are effectively expecting us to self diagnose, to decide if it is safe to leave until Monday morning. Yes, a common cold is not a major concern, but lots of things that are...

    Egg beater hand drills

Mine's the sort with the Jacobs chuck, so I use the chuck key. Which doesn't fit terribly well, maybe it is not he original. Seems that the side handle is useful if you are using it as a (less comfortable) breast drill, but I tend to use mine to drill vertically, so perhaps that's why I was...

    Egg beater hand drills

I don't have a photo to hand, but yes, there is the main, in-line handle that is all I normally use, but it also comes with a detachable side handle that screws on the opposite side to the main gear and tuning handle, along the axis of the main gear. It's not the same model as this one, but a...

    Egg beater hand drills

Perhaps someone can help me with something I can't understand. I have one of those egg beater style hand drills; in my case one of the Fooprint ones with a proper chuck. It comes with a side handle. Perhaps I am being thick here, but how do you use it ? With your third arm ? Using just the...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

Wandering a bit, but our woodwork lessons were very traditional, and some things may be out of date. Since taking it back up again I have recalled learning many things at school that I had almost forgotten - we covered burnishing cabinet scrapers, which I had to re-learn. Sharpening and...

    WIP: a Smoker's bow

Gosh, this has been sitting in a pile of pieces for too long ! I've been up to a lot of other, non-woodwork, things. Mostly involving going walkabout in the hills. Got back to it this weekend, making the seat and arm bow from that board of walnut. For this I followed Jack Hill's advice and...

Glue and mortice and tenon joints.

My "O"-level woodwork teacher said to aim for a joint to fit straight from the saw rather than adjusting with plane or chisel (a) so that you impress the examiners and (b) because the sawn finish offers a better surface key for the glue than a smooth planed one. It sounded logical to me, maybe...

How long does it take to heat your house?

Yes, many times  Explaining that a bit of physical activity might help is even more dangerous ground.

    Bread bin wip

I do so enjoy a WIP from Andy. Worth it for the interesting tools alone :D Regarding a vent - I had to replace the bottom in our (bought) breadbin, it had gone mouldy. I put a few vent holes in the back to try and avoid it happening again. I don't think you'll stop bread going stale by...

    MDF shelf unit conundrum

Ho ho ho. Obviously they must use very expensive fixings. If I've found the right one, just over 1 metre square H102½xW102½xD22cm, reduced to £594 from £699. I would imagine the shelves are grooved for the uprights, and glued. By not having any of the uprights in line, there is enough...

Cracks in Walnut, how to deal with them

I see what you mean, but some of the bits I have had the heartwood was so soft, the only use I could find was to poke out the middle leaving a tube, and turn it into rustic bird boxes ! I suspect that the rot had started in the standing tree - it was tree surgeon's waste, and so often it comes...

    A&e visits

I don't think it is that simple. I'd think carefully about the "charge drunks" idea. So the NHS should charge people who've had a couple of drinks because their lifestyle contributed to the risk. Then what about all the other hobbies and lifestyles that put you at increased risk of a health...

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

I suspect this is neither purely an economy drive, or listening to customers. I suspect that with the closure of Clico and the passing of the Clifton brand to Thomas Flinn, they are not equipped to forge parts. Hence an engineered solution. I guess subcontracted casting and laser cutting...

Cracks in Walnut, how to deal with them

Could be. But what I would say is that amongst the tree surgeons waste I have got hold of, it seems common - more so than any other wood - to find the heartwood decayed to mush but the rather uninteresting sapwood quite intact. So it would not surprise me to find that top bit unusable.

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

Go on then ... is it an improvement ? I can see that it avoids machining in favour of laser cutting, but what's in it for us ? I've not used the new style, but worry that it is one less distinctive feature to make one pick a Clifton plane. I understand if you can't comment :)

Archive video of rural chest making

Looks like a twybil ? http://www.ashleyilestoolstore.co.uk/green-woodworking/twybil ... used with more than a little skill ! Edited to add: I've been thinking on this, and of course why it works is that he has riven wood, so the grain is parallel to the board and the tool only has to follow...

Cracks in Walnut, how to deal with them

That top bit looks quite rotten to me. Walnut heartwood is less durable than the sapwood.

    Saw sharpening and setting.

Eclipse 77's vary quite a lot. The width of the pin in particular. I've got 3 (for 50p each !), one of which is quite fine and good for small saws, the other two are too big.

Cutting a slot in copper pipe

A 6" slot in a 28mm pipe .. hacksaw & patience is definitely the safe way. Clamp into the channel of a bit of steel angle to make a straight guide if needed.
