    WIP: a Smoker's bow

Got a chance to do a bit more on Saturday. Stargazer spotted that it is unusual to be working on the top part of the chair before sorting out the undercarriage. I think I mentioned part of the reason earlier, which is that I wanted to do all the drilling in the seat and arm bow before shaping...

friends insisting I start using power tools

Another hand tool worker here. If it is your hobby, do as pleases you. I much prefer the pace, peace and tranquility of using hand tools. I could probably be said to be a bit "stubborn about it". I used to use all manner of power tools, now rarely any. Even turning I do under my own...

My faith in British craftmanship restored

Nice to hear some positive comment on a Sheffield maker ! I have been pleased with the Joseph Marples squares I bought too.

    Sliding Bevels: A Cautionary Tale

Ah yes, well worth checking both old and new tools. I had a Silverline mitre square that was a degree out. And of a batch of old tri-squares there was almost every defect possible; the brass facing of the stock worn to a taper, the blades worn into a concave curve with use, etc. Mostly easily...

    VERY VERY HEAVY engineering

Super pictures Andy. I love this heavy engineering. I also marvel at the composure of the machinist on their crankshaft lathe, though the still picture doesn't quite capture it, that mass of metal whizzing past your ear must be quite unnerving.

Soldering iron/soldering station... for less than £100

I have been using my Weller TC iron for the last 23 years without a problem, if that helps. Definitely better than a cheapie. It would be nice if the iron plated bits were a little easier to wet - I blame the higher soldering temperatures for lead free solders.

Solder won't take on tool repair

Unless it's very old it won't be tin/lead solder but a RoHS compliant solder, probably 99C, which melts quite a bit hotter. Old style non-thermostatic irons intended for leaded solder may struggle. Assuming the original connection was soldered not crimped - if the latter it might not take to...

    Bread bin wip

That's a tricky one. How much seasonal movement is likely ? Might be enough to matter with the grain side to side on the top and base, but front to back on the sides. Some sort of sliding dovetail rather than T&G ?

    Sharpening Centre Bits

Sort of. It's more what needle files may do that an auger file won't, as it has safe edges. You may find proper auger files at Dieter Schmidt, if you are lucky.

    WIP: a Smoker's bow

The weekend just gone I got around to finishing the drilling; the last couple of holes in the seat, then the underside of the arm rest. This is harder without the nice flat board to draw sight lines on. I resorted again to the full sized plan; spread out on the bench draping over the edge so...

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

Is is not that you want the iron to stay seated flat on the frog, to avoid the top of the bevel behaving as a fulcrum with the leverage of the cutting forces causing the iron to "arch its back" up off the frog ? Only speculating you understand, but I do think that the stay set cap did really...

    Chopsticks anyone?

True in Japan too. A diet with raw fish can takes the guts by surprise. I note that the Japanese phrasebook I had, rather like the one here, listed "I have diarrhoea", but not "I have constipation", the chances of the latter being vanishingly small.

    Chopsticks anyone?

I shared a student house with a Japanese friend. We ate oriental food together on many an occasion, using chopsticks. Since most meals work by taking some food from communal serving dishes, and we were all in the college rowing team with boosted appetites, you soon learned to operate...

Countersink / counterbore and clearance hole all in one go?

I got a similar set, #8 and #10 with matching plug cutter, but mine drill three steps, pilot, clearance and counterbore in one go. They are branded Disston, and came from Screwfix but many years ago.

    Cabinet scraper

In these days of throw away hardpoint saws, the material to make both thick (crosscut) and thin (backsaw) cabinet scrapers in any shape you like is easily obtainable. I use a homemade concave one for finishing round components like chair legs - it cuts easily enough with a HSS or Cobalt steel...

    WIP: a Smoker's bow

That's quite a machine Andy. But a more appropriate tool for this scale of work might be one I know you already have: not-a-boring-machine-t89822.html At least it might allow repeated drilling at the same angle. They look rather appealing, how accurate / repeatable are they, I wonder ...

    A&e visits

I think you'd also need some blind spots to support privatisation. Whatever the inefficiencies of the NHS, privatising so that we can create a career for a whole tier of health insurance peddlers driving BMW's and wearing snappy suits surely can't be the best answer for most of us. There are...
