    Low back welsh chair build

They say olive oil can go rancid. I'm not sure it is all that bad, but it might be a bit of a risk to try it first on a chair with quite a lot of work in it. A very enjoyable thread BTW, both for the chair itself and how you got there !

    Vindolanda planes

Watching Alice Roberts on Digging for Britain the other night, they showed two Roman woodworking planes being unearthed at Vindolanda, in fairly good preservation in anaerobic conditions under a floor. Another job for rxh, perhaps? Can't find any photos on line yet unfortunately, but they were...

Which Honing Paste do YOU Use?

None. Just a fine Norton oilstone, then a slate stone or translucent Arkansas. Then a wipe off with a cloth and get back to work. Well, for carving tools I do have a Flexcut crayon thing, don't know what's in it, and I don't do much of that. I suppose I also have a leather wheel and some...

    Combination square springs

My sister laughed at me, saying only I would have a tins labelled "Springs", "Self-tappers", "plastic washers", etc etc I was sure she was wrong, glad to know I am in good company.

What is kindest glue to plane blades?

I mentioned elsewhere that I was re-gluing an old stool at the weekend. The remains of the PVA glue, despite the 37 years setting time, were still soft enough to pare away easily with a chisel. Similar texture to hot melt glue.

    spoke pointer

You could get an old Marples rounded one and a pointy one from here: http://www.oldtools.co.uk/102-drilling-tools £18 each. A bit better. Sharpening might be interesting though.

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Disassembled and re-glued this stool yesterday. It was the first piece of furniture I ever made, at 13, in school. First M&T joints ! I used it at my desk for "O" and "A" level homework, it was used and abused through several student houses and flats, and is now in daily use by DW at her...

I Spent Five Days At The Windsor Workshop ...

I like Jack Hill's country chairs. He makes complexity seem plain, in contrast to many who seem to achieve the opposite ! I think James has probably got it right with his course. Although I understand and sympathise with the OP wanting just to get on with learning to make chairs, a lot of...

    Firefox upgrade, YouTube aaarrrggghhh!

I get on OK with the new Firefox on Linux. Some things have wandered around without good reason, but it is quicker.

It's all about having the right tool for the job

Its a good one isn't it. There's an extended version here (amongst many places !) http://itsamanslife.com/wp-content/uplo ... olSale.pdf Reminds me of the ones I get from CPC.

    Auger Bit File

Probably wasn't the right thing to do then, suggesting you buy some other stuff as well to make the delivery charge seem more reasonable

    Auger Bit File

Well, I wouldn't do an order for just the one file, but there are always other things you like the look of ... they have a few new augurs of the old style left, e.g. What do you expect to find cheaper than 10€ ? :|

    Christmas shopping the fun way

I went Christmas shopping in Chester with the family at the weekend. If you must, this is the way to do it: What a splendid machine. I just love that there are people around crazy enough to undertake a project like that. At Chester station we were joined by 70013 Oliver Cromwell at the...

The design of one sided axes.

The Peter Follansbee article is pretty good, and I envy his side axe. As well as the protection of knuckes, another obvious point is that in shaping a large beam, unless you are Japanese with a very good eye and balls of steel, you'll be standing to the side of it, so the angled head is needed...

    Metric only tape measures

But when you come to hang a door, everything makes sense in Imperial. It is 78" x 30" x 1 1/4", or 80" x 32" x 1 3/4", the hole for the latch is a convenient imperial position, the hinges a round Imperial size. You can do it, but it feels like fighting it to work in Metric ? I'm old enough to...

The design of one sided axes.

These are "side axes", for hewing a flat surface on a beam etc. I'm not an expert, but I guess the wonky handle keeps your knuckles out of mischief and your sight line clear.

    Low back welsh chair build

I haven't forgotten this, until I get around to scanning the paper list, there is an APTGW list of course tutors on-line here: https://www.bodgers.org.uk/index.php/55-courses Are you within striking distance of Weald and Downland Museum ? The bodgers will be gathering down there in May...
