Lucky devil, they don't often come that tidy.

LED light strobing when turned off

Is it a circuit with two switches ? Would be odd in a bathroom, but possible I guess. It's possible that the bulk capacitor in the integrated electronics is slowly charging from a leakage current or capacitive coupling in the cable of a dual switch configuration, until it reaches a level of...

    Refinishing bathroom cabinet

I made a cabinet and some shelves for the bathroom quite a few years ago, in steamed beech. It didn't quite match the (bought) mirror frame, so thinking I was being clever I mixed various clear and tinted spirit based polyurethane varnishes to get a nice match. The finish is now getting...

    Exterior paint

A very timely thread for me, this one. Are the other paints in the Bedec range anything special ? Looking for a white gloss low VOC paint for interior doors that will dry passably smooth, rather than with very prominant brush marks.

My first turned item - A sphere

That unkown wood wouldn't be some kind of Eucalyptus would it ? Very prone to splitting whatever you do.

    Craft show insurance

Some organisations provide basic cover for their members, e.g., the Association of pole lathe turners and green woodworkers provides, as part of the membership benefits, enough insurance cover for demonstrating and have-a-go sessions at APTGW and local group events. There's the (inexpensive)...

    Remaking dovetail saw handle

But don't knock the plate right to the bottom of the back. Is there enough of the handle left to judge from it, and the hole positions in the plate, how far the plate was intended to be inserted ? It may only be 1/8 inch or so. I'm sure I've bored everyone enough times by explaining how the...

    garden cloche

What thickness is the glass ? a wooden "ridge" with two sawn grooves for the glass at +/- 30 degrees ?

    Yet another chair

Finished ! I only know one way to weave a seat, so that it is the same as the others. The middle bit of the Cupid's bow Is a bit awkward isn't it. Hard to get in with a scraper, I found a sharp knife was the best tool, on green wood at least. Having now made a "set" of four, this one...

Bought an old Stanley 4 1/2 - What level of refurbing?

For what it's worth ... my Record #6 came with a thin Stanley cutting iron, and possibly the thinnest bit of spring steel as a cap iron I've ever seen, no maker admitted to it by applying their mark. So, I bought a Clifton 2 piece cap iron, a Clifton thick cutting iron, and they threw in the...

Observations/questions on using a Record 050C plough plane

I have one of these too, and I do rather enjoy using it, despite its weaknesses. The shaving ejection - or lack thereof - is quite annoying, with practice you learn to poke them out (with a pencil ?) and cut yourself less in the process ! Thicker shavings come out a bit better than thin on...

Bought an old Stanley 4 1/2 - What level of refurbing?

It looks in quite nice condition to me as it is. I'd just grind and sharpen. The only plane I've bothered to do any flattening on was one with a concave sole. Winding out the adjuster a shade between shavings it would take nothing, nothing, nothing, huge bite ! Well, there was that Acorn #3...

interested in your experiences paying for tradespeople

Hate it, so don't use many. Dislike the evasiveness over VAT. Can't understand why it is so hard to get correct paperwork out of them - Hetas stove installers, FENSA window fitters, gas installers - all either no paperwork, needed reminding, or not properly filled out. The best of them have...

Small walnut side table with drawer

It is looking rather smart . The drawer pull looks right, so was worth all that thought ! The fit of the bottom you were a bit disappointed with. You say it it a shade narrow, but it looked like it was a snug fit. There's no possibility that the groove in the slips is not quite deep enough...

Small walnut side table with drawer

IIRC you mentioned in another thread how not many people post "mistakes". What a shame, a mistake and more importantly what worked to put it right is well worth sharing. Much better result than planing, and a lot easier than fully dismantling or starting again ! You can crack on and finish it...

    Site activity diminished?

I will confess I'm a member of er ... a few forums. And I have inherited one small one of my own. The forum format in general seems to be in decline in favour of other social media, this one actually seems to be doing quite well comparatively. And at least the owner is still (just) about ...

    Metric only tape measures

No. Base 10 is only for people who need to count on their fingers. Most arithmetic is done by computers in base 2. Or if we want to write it compactly, base 8, or 16. So just as in base 2 we have columns for 1's, 2's , 4's, ... 32's - as fractional values 1/2, 1/4. 1/8 ... 1/32 etc are...

So I went looking for a Nippy vice on eBay...

Be careful what you wish for, as they say. I was shopping for a bird nesting box with a camera a la Springwatch for DW's birthday. Someone pointed me in the direction of a company called "Nature cameras". Looked them up and got very surprising results on account of M being right next to N one...

    Yet another chair

I don't know if you are all bored of greenwood chairs yet, but perhaps its a break from discussing the merits of the new look forum :D Some time ago, I was speculating - a bit doubtfully - as to whether Joshua Klein's method of making the back slats for his banistair back chair was actually...
