Are cheap sash cramps worth it?

I've got some that look just like that, came from Screwfix. I've used them quite a bit. I also have a set of much heavier steel 'mock Record' ones from Axminster. On the downsides, I wouldn't want to put as much pressure on with the ali ones (but with good joints, who needs to  ). The...

    Saw files

Thanks for the thoughts. It seems not quite such a pessimistic view as the older posts seemed to suggest. Perhaps I'll try Bahco - I see Power Tools Direct have them at reasonable prices.

Advice needed on how to make this knot look good please

Actually, what are those butterflies doing ? One seems to be into fairly solid wood, one into nothing much. One treatment for loose knots, which I've used for (much) smaller round-ish knots in oak, is to transplant some solid knot from a bit of scrap and inlay it into the cleaned up hole.

    Windsor chair seat

Fine woodworking suggested drawing round your butt, and it worked very well for me. I agree that the scooping out need be no more than 1/2 to 3/4" - having sat on a fair fiew chairs (bodger's ball craft competition ...) it is surprising how little hollowing is needed to make a chair a lot...

    Refinishing bathroom cabinet

B****r it, Custard is quite right. A fresh coat of PU (Ronseal satin) over old scratches off fairly easily with a fingernail, despite a rub down with Abranet before applying.

    Saw files

I was sharpening a big rip saw this morning, and I notice my big saw file is a bit worse for wear. It is the same one I've used to sharpen my one-man crosscut saw a few times, so no wonder really. Maybe time for a new one. Doing a search, I see quite a bit of historic moaning about the...

Advice required on building a pallet bed.

You might want to be careful what you get up to on that . The stack of bits that serve as legs might be a bit wobbly if there were any racking forces in the head-foot direction  Edited to add - where did that picture come from ? I wonder if they are not specially constructed "pretty...

    Finer Joinery & Cabinet Making

So ... who's going to have the nerve to put the first post in there then ?

    Best plane for a woman.

Are you sure it is a gender related difference. I would guess on a regular course you get participants many of which fall into two categories: -Those who have tried woodwork already, enjoy it and want to build skills. -Serial craft course participants, who try lots of things looking for what...

    Pig sticker handles

Yes, Ray Iles was who I had in mine when I said I thought I'd seen beech. I'll probably go for hornbeam if I have a suitable offcut handy, or beech. I think I'll not turn it. I have made 2 sets of screwdrivers (for SS as it happens) with oval handles turned off-centre on the pole lathe, but...

Does Danish Oil really make ash go horrible?

I have made a few ash chairs now, with the oldest about 4 years old, all finished with Rustins Danish oil. The colours now are quite like Andy's - the most recent quite white still, the oldest a sort of pale biscuit brown. I rather like it. Now, I confess I've never been much troubled by...

    Pig sticker handles

Suppose I had a slightly beat up mortice chisel of this sort. If I were to replace the handle, what is the best choice of wood ? For chisels with hooped handles ash would be normal, but it splits a bit easy for a handle without hoops. I think I've seen beech used? I have ash, beech...

    Best plane for a woman.

I thought Womens' day was supposed to be about "gender parity" ? That went well then.

    Help me understand this joint

I need to make a desk, and rather liked the look of the first one. But I think the drawbacks listed are probably real. And - for a modern desk, it will probably have a computer on it at some point, and deep aprons, drawers etc mean you can't address a keyboard terribly well.

Attach steel legs to table top

One other thing to watch out for is the reaction of oak and steel in contact - the tannin and iron react to turn the wood black, and corrode the iron. The contact if the wood and steel on the underneath may not matter, but you might be best using stainless screws and fittings.

    Refinishing bathroom cabinet

Mostly it is not bad. I was thinking that, if the worst case is that a freshening up coat doesn't bond well and looks bad, then I've not lost much as I can still strip it all off and start again. I can appreciate that, if I were in the position of a pro like Custard, I'd want a solution that...

    Draw knife question.

Would I be right in thinking that one in the picture has oval handles ? Turning them off centre to make them oval might make the grip and control better ? If you do make one, let us know what you think of the design after you've test driven it.

    Draw knife question.

I think as you do. Might be good for light work, but will tend to dig in. I suspect he is more a tool maker than a drawknife user. The Flexcut drawknife is a bit like that, but with the handles bent a bit towards you. I don't know what metal was his starting point to say whether/how you could...

    Help me understand this joint

Could you not make it as three pieces that knock down. The two end frames, and the top with the framing for the drawers. Attach them with bolts and metal cross dowels from inside the drawer openings and round the back into the legs ? Forgive me if I'm not making much sense, on the wine ATM.
