    Imperial vs Metric

And if there are 5, or 7 people ? I think the point has been made that fractions are convenient if you pick convenient numbers. So 1/3 of 3/4 is easy. 1/3 of 1/2" is also easy, but wait, I don't have 1/6" graduations on my tape. There might just be 1/12" graduations on my rule somewhere, or...

2020 Secret Santa ......and we're off!

Come on folks. If Phil doesn't get the draw done soon I won't have time to make something !

Removing tiles- which multi tool blade (s)?

I used an SDS tile removing chisel from Screwfix. I managed to knock plaster off the opposite side of the wall. A friend ended up introducing himself to a neighbour through a hole in the wall. Go steady ! And yes, wear gloves and goggles. After a fortnight with a small injury on my finger that...

    Wind turbine

It's on Banggood. Did you expect it to actually work or something ?

    Imperial vs Metric

I use both. If you are making a door, it really is (e.g) 32"x78"x1 3/4. You can use cumbersome metric equivalents if you like, but why ? And as AndyT said some pages back, it is handy to have some drills in metric and imperial sizes so surely one will give a good fit. Now my auger bit...

    Sunday Afternoon Mystery Object Quiz

Ours came in a tin of odds and ends, but including crimping irons for fitting hydraulic hose connectors. Another interesting item in the collection was a large metal square, marked Austin Airframes.

    Sunday Afternoon Mystery Object Quiz

I wish I could remember what #8 is. What makes it more embarassing is that I've got one ... Item 10 looks somewhat like bits of tyre inflator, but I don't imagine they are...

2020 Secret Santa ......and we're off!

Come on people ! Believe me, it will be the highlight of Christmas day. You can look forward to unwrapping something more interesting than socks, you can have the fun of seeing what everyone else has got without feeling left out, and you can hopefully use it as an excuse sneak off to the...

Tightly fitting joints -- how tight is tight?

Hah yes - my Smokers Bow chair only went together with a lot of persuasion and a big mallet because the Titebond 3 made the spindles swell. Nothing cracked fortunately, and however much glue got scraped off, it has not fallen apart yet ! Hide glue is much better for that sort of job, it seems...

Tightly fitting joints -- how tight is tight?

I was taught that in hardwood, it should be possible to assemble by hand alone, in softwood with gentle tap by mallet maybe. But this is to avoid splitting anything, not a glue consideration.I would have thought with water based glues at least, which soak into the wood somewhat, you would be...

Wood related books - now all spoken for.

If you manage to replicate some of Mr Springett's creations, we'd love to see them (and I'll be in serious awe !). But it is interesting just to read how it's done.

    (UK) maple

Limited experience, but it is quite hard - harder than sycamore. And it makes very nice smoked chillies 😋

    Contacting Amazon

Consider other suppliers. Amazon anger me that they provide a platform for, and seemingly turn a blind eye to, the sale of huge amounts of counterfeit goods. I certainly won't trust them for electronic goods anymore.

Wood related books - now all spoken for.

Looks like all taken now - if you (Alastair, Adrian, TJC) PM me an address I'll post them. Assuming they can go 2nd class large letter or small package I'll cover it.

Wood related books - now all spoken for.

I wonder if any of you lot would like these: Currently being plugged by Mortise and Tenon magazine, but be warned it is more about the author's philosophy than actual woodworking. Read once, pretty much as new. I'm a pole lathe turner. It's not going to happen .... As new condition...

thoughts on construction of a record cabinet

Looks good, glad to see good solid lippings and not iron-on-fall-off stuff ! Good to hear it is solid a s a rock, it needs to be for LP's, they are surprisingly heavy. But most of all, thanks for coming back with the pictures ! It is always good to see the end of the story 👍

    Staircase spindle movement

My thought - having never made a staircase in my life - is that there doesn't look to be much meat left where the string is cut, maybe the whole thing is moving.

Drilling a straight 20mm hole through 250mm oak gate post.

How accurate is needed ? I'd go for a Scotch eye auger, and an assistant standing back to judge level. But you might prefer a 21st century method ...

    Slipstone revival?

As an alternative, a quick wash off with paraffin and a stiff paintbrush did the job for my old Norton stones. Looked like new.

    Divider tool

These "lazy tong" type mechanisms require surprisingly good pivot points if the acculumulated slop is not going to be a problem. A bit like those pantograph mechanisms for enlarging / reducing drawings.
