How To Cut Mitred or Mitre Dovetails WIP

When I saw the thread title, I thought that's what you would be making. Without commercial pressure or the current fashion for exposed joinery, I have used them a couple of times in furniture. As a teenager I made some individual bookshelves with secret mitered dovetails to attach ends, which...

    Sloppy soap.

Oh. I thought we were talking about Scandi wood finishing for a moment.

    Timber identification, please

I can only see Ivy leaves ! That picture and #2 of the original post look exactly like wild plum, which I have used a lot at Wimpole.

    Any alternative to Maplins

Am I imagining it,or did Maplin have their own electronics magazine that you could by in better newsagents ? I grew up on Everyday Electronics (started reading it at 12!) and Hobby Electronics, then ETI.

More professional online options: http://uk.farnell.com/ https://uk.rs-online.com/ They might not be good for private customers rather than business. CPC is the more consumer-y / cheaper sidekick of Farnell, and will sell to anyone with a credit card. http://cpc.farnell.com/ Rapid are...

    Training Options

I think learning to use a pole lathe really teaches a lot. When all the power comes from your leg, scrapers seem a lot less appealing and you really have to master the skew chisel. And when you can produce clean, smooth cuts whilst treadling at the same time, and remembering to back the tool...

    Nice chisel mallet in lidl

It looks like a kid's toy with the primary colours and shapes. Is that not the point of the box, finding the right sized / shaped hole for each piece ? I think I'll stick with a nice simple wooden mallet thanks.

    Total failure: drill-powered lathe

Or, if is is a small drill stand, turn it on it's side. This was my first "lathe" Making sure all the bits are well clamped down, of course ! The live centre is a cut down flat drill bit, the dead centre a pointy bolt from a bit of scrap flatpack furniture bolted with repair washers through...

Where can I buy quality woodworking tools in the UK

I've had luck with Toolnut too, for Henry Taylor chisels / gouges IIRC.

    Oak Chair - Joinery Complete

I also like your curves. A simple design that looks just right beats an overly fancy one IMHO. Nice job.

    Workbenches and wood expansion/shrinking

There's a lot to be learned from looking at the construction of an old wood drawing board. They had to stay flat. Wooden cleats were screwed to the back. At the centre with a round hole, the outer clearance screw holes in the cleat being slotted. The ones I dismantled had recessed (with eg...

    How would you make this?

Just because there are plenty out there doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea ... You would think it would fall apart in summer or burst the bands in winter. Barrels aren't straight sided for a reason. But, perhaps in softwood there will be enough give for it to work. In hardwood, I...

    Dovetail

I'm guessing that you haven't yet made enough posts for the picture to show ? It's a measure to avoid spam posts - please persevere ! At school I was taught dovetail angles of 1 in 6 for softwood, 1 in 8 for hardwood, with not much said about the relative sizes and spacing of tails and pins...

Great cause, respect to Richard. First year in a while that I'm not off hillwalking. I might be able to make this one \:D/ .

    Millers Falls cigar shave

That's a very kind offer Pete. I think I will persevere a little; if I take it carefully I can lower the bevel angle without losing cutter length, so a bit of trial and error should be OK. But as a guide, what is the length of the flat bevel on yours Pete ? That gives a fairly good idea of...

    Millers Falls cigar shave

Awkward little b****r isn't it. Mine was a long way from right to start, and my first go at sharpening with grinder and oilstone has left we with not enough relief to work. I'll have another go, maybe by hand with a homemade jig. At least from there I can correct it without losing more...

Planing a concave form (without a compass plane)

Yes, especially if softwood, the axe and drawknife start looking like the quickest way. If you're only taking off 7mm, you need a bit if practice with the axe first I would suggest.

    Millers Falls cigar shave

Here's what I've bought: In its current state, there is not the wide, flat outside bevel I see in Jimi's pictures of sharpening one, more a curve in to meet the inner surface at a rather blunt edge, with no inside bevel at all. Looking around the web, the consensus seems to be for a wide...
