So close, and yet so far. Norris woes...

If you can find/make something that fits, why not set the original aside whilst you think on it, or until you find someone who can do a pukka job of the weld, if you have any doubt ?

    Three unusual doors.

I like how the straps have turned out with the heat and oil treatment - I hope you avoided the fumes if you were using old engine oil though. Careful choice of Google search terms called for there

Recommend me a wood filler for use on an ash floor

It may be a bit late, but for screw heads, I used a screwdigger which drills pilot hole, clearance and counterbore in one go, and comes with a matching plug cutter to cover the head. Looks better than filler IMHO. Tonguetite screws where possible avoid needing to do this too often.

Topic of the week ‘Hat’ - REMINDER - KEEP THE LIST GOING

I thought for a moment you meant you wanted to talk about hats ! Wooden hats are just possible, I've seen one woven from ash splints - anyone here tried ash splint basketry, I wonder ?

    I like technology

Hydrogen is a very small molecule, so I guess will find leaks easily ? It is perhaps not as dangerous as you might think, because it heads upwards so quickly when it escapes - outdoors at least.

    Plane Sole Scratches

The designers of these corrugated sole planed obviously drifted off during physics lessons at school. Friction does not depend on the contact area. If you reduce the contact area whilst keeping the normal forces the same, the force is now spread over less contact area, so the pressure on the...

    Small table top

It might seem wasteful, but I think I'd use the extra width to lose some of the lighter wood (sapwood ?) off the sides of all the boards, or at least the two you are calling your main boards, placing the cuts to get the most harmonious grain/colour transitions you can. Certainly losing that...

    XR

It is true. With 8 billion people, we have about 1 hectare per person of land, if you exclude desert and mountainous areas too high to cultivate. To provide space to live, work, for infrastructure, food, constructional materials, fibres for fabrics, and biofuels for when the oil and gas run...

    Unusual saw

Thomas Flinn still make / sell them. But this looks in great shape for an old one, should work well. They beat a bow saw any day IMHO. Two man saws are even better if you have an assistant.

I've been offered a free Walnut tree

The dead walnut pieces we have had at our greenwood meets show a surprising and unfortunate property; unlike most woods the dark heartwood rots away much quicker than the white sapwood, leaving a tube of the less interesting stuff. Useful for bird boxes or maybe a dijeridoo, but not much else...

    Unusual saw

It is a one man crosscut saw. For sawing logs mostly. This thread has what you want to know : sharpening-great-american-tooth-pattern-saw-t60184.html

    Domestic plumbing query

I'm not a plumber, but I'm confused as to why, if you have a sealed system, it would be necessary to turn off any valve at the pressure vessel before draining the system ? If the filling loop isn't connected, there are limited ways the water can be coming through. If the filling loop is...

    How to make this table?

Me too. Regarding train toilet facilities, that was what I was hinting at when I said they were impregnated with creosote and possibly much worse ... but as creosote is a carcinogen, I think you can't buy real sleepers for landscaping purposes anymore, let alone making kitchen tables. Besides...

    How to make this table?

Everyone is being very polite .... Are you sure ? How on earth do you keep a table like that clean and hygienic ? I presume deliberately distressed and not made from real sleepers - I don't think you can get them anymore - as they are impregnated with creosote, and quite probably much worse.

    Cereal bowl

As hinted above, Chestnut food safe oil == liquid paraffin. And, as it says on the tin, it's not suitable for vessels which must contain water. However applied, it all soaks in without leaving a surface film or sealing the surface. My less than perfect solution is walnut oil, followed by...

    Gold Mallet/Milk bottle Mallet

The cutting up - how small did you aim for, and what did you cut with ? It sounds a bit of an undertaking to do by hand. Presumably you can re-use the turning swarf.

Electromagnet Bench Attachment A-Level Idea - NEED OPINIONS!

One way to get around the power consumption / unexpected walkabout on power failure : Wind your electromagnet around a strong permanent magnet. The permanent magnet does the holding without sustained power; energising the coil the right way round to counteract the permanent magnet allows...

What's that Andy, is your Spice girls CD too precious

    Glazed doors mostly by hand

I saw this thread and thought "Oh great, AndyT's doing a new WIP". Not quite so new. But I think we should make it a tradition to bump one of his old WIP's every now and again - my memory being what it is, I can then enjoy them all over again.

    Help, properties of a curve/circle

I'm fairly sure a rod tensioned by a string will not be a circular arc.
