Odd Joint - will it work?

How strong is your mock-up ? Take care that you can actually assemble the joint - do the splines slide in from the side ?

Secret Santa 2018 Pictures here, please (page nine start).

Adding images as an attachment works better these days, the size limit seems to have been raised. I could do it all from my Android phone, though I did have to use the email it to myself trick to reduce the size. Mind you, I had a lot of practice because I lost my TalkTalk provided web space...

Photos ? It's part of the SS T&C, I thought ... Still a few short, I think, if my counting is right :?

Cross-grain panels. What to fix and what floats?

"Breadboard ends" is what you need to look up. The ends are M&T, but with the mortices elongated except for the centre one to allow movement. Only glue in the middle, pegs through slotted holes in the outer tenons.

Secret Santa 2018 Pictures here, please (page nine start).

A big thanks to my Secret Santa. I was quite taken by the presumably custom wrapping paper ! Here's the collection of things inside. A 6" rule, with a handy homemade depth gauge which fits with magnets and a locking screw. A cabinet scraper and nicely proportioned burnisher. And a bag...

    Crank Handled Paring Chisels.

Yes, I've always thought of them as principally a pattern makers tool, especially the in-cannel gouges, that would shape fillets in internal corners, avoiding difficult to cast shapes and stress concentrating sharp corners. They are also popular with green woodworkers making shrink pots.

Who doesn't get a mobile signal at home ?

As I understand it, Vodafone offer WiFi calling, but not texts. And, unless it's changed recently, you only get it if you got your phone through Vodafone with all their pre-installed c**p on it. EE does both calls and texts. Don't know about the others. I ended up resorting to going back to...

    MOSELEY Moulding Plane

Looking at the original Tooltique photos at the start of the thread, in comparison to the picture of the re-profiled iron against the blue tape above, the profile has been significantly modified in the process, the original quirks were narrower and deeper, so I wouldn't read too much about the...

    Unusual skill retained

Can't you give it a wipe round with lead free plumbing solder / flux ? The 99C is 99% Sn, 1% Cu and safe for drinking water (I'm sure he does a nicer job than that).

Yellowish flecks appearing in wood as I sand

Hard to tell from pictures, and I'm only looking at them on my phone, but in zooming in on the first picture it looks a lot like delaminating veneer, but the end grain on the edges of the top looks pretty convincing in places too ?

Yellowish flecks appearing in wood as I sand

If that top is not solid, someone has done a darn fine job of faking it ! Could it be old finishes in the open grain of the wood, or even a natural material like oxidised oils or resin in the wood ?

New Laws vs Mail Order Tools

Now, how is this going to work ? Who is going to police what is a solely residential address, and what isn't ? Does the tool seller need to judge, the delivery driver, or who ? How do you tell a hobbyist from a sole trader working out of his home address, on the basis of the information a...

    Not so smart meter

No it's not. Any meter allows you to be charged for what you use. The smart meter allows charging according to when it was used. Allows you to see what you're using without going headlong into the cupboard under the stairs (or where ever), and allows remote meter reading. So it can only save...

    Stanley Bailey #5 Spring Cap

Either the iron is not seated properly, or the frog is on the p**s. I suspect that the issue might be down to detail of the shape of that kidney shaped hole in the lever cap. It's not clear to me what would stop it walking out as the iron is adjusted. It seems quite big. Edited to add: I...

    extension costs?

I assumed that architects would have some concept of working to a budget. Hah. Ours had absolutely no interest, never asked or discussed costs beyond the £/sq m ballbark. Went from bad to worse once we started talking with tradesmen who produced not much better estimates (quote ? No chance)...

    Not so smart meter

For the time being at least, this is the correct answer. That they don't work if you switch supplier is remarkable.

    Stanley Bailey #5 Spring Cap

It doesn't have the word "Handyman" on it anywhere does it ?

Perhaps the screw is a replacement from a different make of plane. Or some other part is not original ?

It clearly doesn't stop them filling my inbox then. Having subscribed to Fine Woodworking for a few years until, like all magazines, it comes full circle, I can now not get off their mailing list !
