    Saw Files

I don't see anyone mentioning it above, but the point of a proper saw file is that it leaves a rounded bottom to the gullet, not a sharp point which might concentrate stress to allow a crack to start. For really fine pitched saws - fine dovetail and gents saws, hopefully they will not be seeing...

    Wood to painted wall adhesive

I have some of those type of plastic plugs - can't get them to work for me. The problem is as much the plasterboard itself that has no strength, especially around the hole ! Better luck with those metal ones that you really need a setting tool for.

Tap & die set advice, please.

I know this is an old thread, but I bought some individual taps from Chronos recently, they are marked Apex UK on the box, and HSS UK on the tap - and they work very well. The set of Chinese no-name ones I bought previously (not from Chronos) were astoundingly useless. They simply would not...

    Gedge's Pattern Auger bit.

The wings are quite easily broken - I have a large Gedge eye auger, which sadly has a broken wing. I wanted it for end grain boring to make rocket logs.

What bits for a hand brace?

I just bought some larger sizes of brad point drills from Wealdens. Reduced shank, ~£4 each, very nicely made in Austria. Well worth the time saved grinding IMHO.

    Anyone know what these are?

    Are they bearing scrapers ?

What bits for a hand brace?

To add to Cheshirechappies list of bits and their uses: Gedge bits for some reason work better for end-grain boring that the rest. Spoon bits make it possible - with practice - to bore a bole that is slightly wider at the bottom than the top. Potential fun combination with fox wedging.

What bits for a hand brace?

If you want Clico Jennings bits, Scotch eye augers, spoon bits, Ray Iles is who to talk to: https://www.oldtoolstore.co.uk/augers-d ... es-1-c.asp He bought up some of Clico's stock, and still has most sizes. The Clico augers I have had can be good, but you might want to buy an auger file...

What bits for a hand brace?

I have some new ones. NOS Irwin and Clico. Why ? Good intact spurs, mostly. But it is almost impossible to but new, square shanked ones since Clico went under. Ray Iles may still have some of their stock. It is worth having a few of each size, I find, for chairmaking. They are fairly...

Hi and I hate you all :)

    Not quite sane ?

Things that didn't go as planned (aka disasters)

Hey, that's not a proper disaster. You got the air ducts swept out, and even found the screw ! Pretty good result really.

    Computer geeks, queue here

As an aside - what makes Windows do that ? I've had a couple of machines that, fairly quickly, went from pretty normally usable to almost ground to a halt. Could not find why. Both times resolved most easily by a fresh install of the current version of windows. Is there some sort of inbuilt...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A wooden cooker hood. Is that a good idea ? Minimum distance to combustables from a hob anyone ?

    Adult crib

There's not a lot more I can add, except that my elderly mother who had for a while night and day wandering tendencies had an alarmed mat next to her bed, so carers could know when she was up. So there are other variants of the alarm system which are commonly used, and might just be helpful ?

Repairing water damaged oak top that's swelled!

Of course it will never get wet again once it has an aquarium on top of it ...

    virus protection

MS Windows has a sort of analogous problem to monoculture too, like the Cavendish banana. All copies genetically identical, so one disease affects all. Linux comes in a variety of flavours with different binaries, even the OS kernel, so exploiting buffer overruns etc is all less easy and...

    Dead Walnut Tree

My (limited) experience of walnut is that the dark heartwood rots away quite quickly leaving the less interesting outer light wood intact. Don't get too excited until you've cut some to see what is within !

    Slate oil

I have a bottle of Stovax slate oil. It is definitely not the same as the above. No wiff of xylene or other VOC's, it is more (very) like liquid paraffin. There is no sign of dried remains around the bottle top so I believe it is a mineral oil. If I picked up the wrong bottle and used...

A look back in time for pattern making

A bit irregular to have 4 as IIII, rather than IV, but 9 as IX, not VIIII ?

Shavings and what to do with them.

Having re-read what the OP was saying properly this time, he is talking about shavings from spindle turning. These are thin and cross-grain so break up easily, I would guess that mixed with grass cuttings, kitchen waste or similar they will be composted well enough within the year. If you have...
