    Useless facts

When banks lend you money , they create it out thin air and then charge you interest on it ! What you're paying for is their acceptance of your liability if you can't pay.

    My Wadkins soupdish

I actually doubt it can be moved this way. Steel can because its a homogenous material. Cast can't because its a mixture of iron & carbon balls (in the case of SCI) or flakes (in the case of wrought). That's why it has to be het up in an oven till its red, then welded and then put back in the...

    My Wadkins soupdish

Don't try and weld cast. It won't work. You need to gas weld it with special rods (dissimilar) and crucially, you need to pre-heat it till its red hot. A decent machine shop will skim a table for you. You might get lucky and find a place with a grinder big enough to grind it flat afterwards.

    Electric vehicles

A decent free public transport system would help immensely. Like what Munich has. Ok, its not free but its nearly free for all it costs. I lived there for 3 years and never missed having a car. My sisters been there for 20 years and has never owned a car. Given that governments create money...

What sort of starter do I need for a 3 wire control, 3ph pillar drill?

Hi All, I have a Fobco 7/8, 3ph pillar drill and the ancient MEM 331VCO starter that came with it has died. I have a new starter but I can't see how to wire it for 3 wire control. My starter has L1, L2, L3 (3ph in), T1, T2, T3 (3ph out) and 13, 14 (NO) for two wire control (?) and the two...

    The cool tool wall

Wow... its quite heavy duty gear isn't it? I have some precision stuff but its all for items 6" or under. That set of centres is huge. I don't even think it'd fit comfortably on my Parkson (which is about 133% the size of a Bridgeport). I could actually use that Sigmasize thing though. If...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

Beardsley Ruml was chairman of the NY Fed in 1945. He gave a speech to the ABA which nails the purpose of taxation in a post gold standard, Fiat currency world. " The legitimate purposes of taxation are: 1) "to give purchasing power of the dollar", 2) to "express public policy in the...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

Seriously? Quantity of Money Theory? People say that they 'know' that there is some direct, linear relationship between the credit or net money supply and a) the general price level and b) foreign exchange rates In fact, no such relationship exists, or has ever existed, in any...

Tap & Die Set Recommendation Needed

Top tip... if you use RTD or any of those grease type tapping compounds, they always end up skanky with little bits of embedded metal from dipping taps in them. Stick the tin (lid off) on the hob at the lowest setting. The 'grease' melts and all the rubbish sinks to the bottom. Remove from...

Looking for an accurate drill press

Auctioneers are everywhere. Google "auctioneers <my area>" substitute, <my area> with err... your area. E.g. "Auctioneers Middlesborough" Bang! Here we go: https://www.lithgowsauctions.com/past-results.php https://www.lithgowsauctions.com/past-results-details.php?auction_id=88 £425 for a...

Looking for an accurate drill press

Consider auctions. That's your best bet for a good price on an industrial drill. I bought three Fobco 7/8's at an auction for between £180 & £220. I kept one for myself and sold the other two for £600 each. So I got a free drill + £600 for a days work.

Just Seen This in an Advert

Oh look... a Trav-A-Dial. I've got a 60s one on my 50s lathe. Its good for 1/2 a thou which this digital one isn't. I agree with other posters, the entry price is too high. You'll be able to get knock offs on Aliexpress for £15 quite shortly.

    Mystery filter socks

Hi All, I've fallen heir to a qty of dust filter socks and I'm trying to work out what they're for. There's small ones and big ones (oh, yes, getting technical now!). I don't have a fancy bag extractor but I might consider one if I can maybe use the bigger of the two bags with it. The small...

Looking for a source of Mahogany cladding

Hi Robin, Thanks for that! Especially the advice about a gap at the bottom. I wouldn't have thought of that. The wood in the link you sent looks quite pale. What do I need to treat it with to bring out the colour? A stain or a varnish or both? I'm aiming for the look on the right rather...

Looking for a source of Mahogany cladding

Hi All, First off, I'm primarily a metal worker. I love wood too and don't make enough use of it. I have been asked by a friend to make him a set of gates for his house. Easy peasy, square frame metal gate with wood cladding infill. Except that his wife has chosen this for the wood (see...
