    Chisel sharpening

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm not interested in making it shiny purely for the sake of it being shiny, so if I shouldn't expect that then I'll stop worrying about it. My aim is to get it to be sharp, and as my previous attempt didn't get it to the point where it will cut paper cleanly (as...

    Not pretty, but it works

Now with built-in chisel storage! Some day all my tools will have a home and I'll be able to do some woodworking.

    Chisel sharpening

Apologies for yet another thread on everyone's favourite topic! But I've been trying to master the art of sharpening chisels, and I don't think I've quite got the hang of it yet. I'm starting off by trying to work on the back of an old 1/2" chisel. I figure that the back ought to be the easiest...

Routing a groove without a fence

    Aha, great; thanks!

Routing a groove without a fence

Absolutely, in this case, but the idea was to take the opportunity to get some experience using the router.

Routing a groove without a fence

Hi all, I've had a router table for a while now, but not got around to doing much with it, so I had a go at doing something with it yesterday. Unfortunately it was without much success, so I ended up using chisels and a hammer instead, but I'd like to understand what I should have done to...

    Chisel mallet

Thanks all! One problem with the Sellers make-your-own-mallet approach is that he uses a chisel and mallet to make a mortice in it ;-) But seeing as I have other projects I want to be getting on with anyway, I think I'll just spend a few pounds on a cheap carpenters mallet, and perhaps...

    Chisel mallet

Thanks to the advice from old threads on this forum, tomorrow I will be the proud owner of a 14mm mortice chisel, ready to attempt to cut my first mortice. However, what I have not been able to find much advice on is what to hit it with, and there is a bewildering array of hammers and mallets...

    Not pretty, but it works

And some space for a few clamps down the back: Now I just need to find somewhere to put the rest of them...

    Not pretty, but it works

Version 2 of my dust extraction infrastructure: Not sure if this should come under "workshop tours" or "past mistakes", but fortunately they're the same forum! Just some old Ikea shelves and offcuts screwed together. The extractor is hidden behind the right-hand shelf, and I've tried to keep...

    Poor cuts with BS300E

Having experiment on some 2x4, I think you're right, I just need to slow down. Happily, that's an easy thing to fix! Thanks!

    Poor cuts with BS300E

Sorry, I wasn't clear: The wood was moving left to right, i.e. it's as if the ruler was the blade. So it's the surface facing the camera that isn't smooth.

    Poor cuts with BS300E

Cutting a half centimeter strip off of some second hand 2"x6" I'm not getting a very clean cut: This is with a BS300E and a TuffSaws "SuperTuff Premium Bandsaw Blade - 2370mm x 5/8" x 3tpi" blade. I wonder if anyone knows what the problem is likely to be, please? Bad setup (tension?)? Bad...

    Diamond stone going orange

I recently became the proud owner of a (coarse) diamond stone, and a second hand no 4 plane from eBay. To break the stone in, I spent a while flattening the plane's sole (starting to feel like a real wood worker now!). The flattening seems to have been a success, but in the process the stone...

Trend CRT MK3 and dust extraction

In case I change my mind! But also, I think a wooden replacement will be just as easy to make, as I won't have to worry about interfacing with pieces that are the wrong shape.

Trend CRT MK3 and dust extraction

Aha, I see what you mean now! I'm a little nervous about making irreversible changes to the dust port module as sunnybob suggests, but replacing it with a small wooden box with a dust port on the side (or maybe top) sounds doable. It hadn't occurred to me that the adapter might also fit onto a...

Trend CRT MK3 and dust extraction

Ah, I'd seen those adapters a couple of times, but now I think I finally understand how they're meant to work! But if I'm right, then you are meant to connect the top part to the back of the fence, which is exactly what I'm having problems doing :-) I was actually planning on using the...

Trend CRT MK3 and dust extraction

Hi folks, I have a Trend CRT MK3 router table up against a wall, and I'm trying to work out how to get it hooked up to my (100mm) dust extractor. It has a 57mm (2.25") internal diameter port pointed at the wall, and I'm worried that the Trend accessories (T30/22 or CRT/4) won't fit with the...

    First router bits

Thanks all for the advice! It looks like the Aldi ones are 1/4", but I found the 15 Trend 1/2" set on eBay for just £20, so I've ordered a set of those and will see how I get on. Thanks again
