    Building a tool wall

Finally got this finished. It's not as neat and tidy as the camera makes it look, but so far it's stayed on the walls, which is a good start! Getting all the cleats cut, glued and painted took quite a bit of time, but I still think it was the best choice. As you can see, I've made holders for...

    Fixing a marking gauge

In case anyone's interested in how it turned out, I ordered a cheap set of metric threaded inserts, and the knob didn't fit in any of them. So I also bought a couple of the cheapest M6 2cm brass thumb screws I could find. I wasn't sure if the body would survive without cracking, but one 9mm hole...

    Rounding over a small cube

Wouldn't it be safe if holding the cube with a grripper or a clamp? I wouldn't want to hold the cube itself, but based on my experience following rounding-over-curved-sides-t114722.html I would not have thought the forces would be a problem when using something else to hold it.

    En/decoding box

If you knew how long it had taken, you'd know :-) I'm afraid I don't know how to put videos on here, sorry. The trick is low-res photos! Although sanding to 1000 grit definitely helped the iron not trip over the grain as much.

    Building a tool wall

Thanks for all your suggestions; a lot to think about! I think the trunking will be annoying wherever it is, but I might go for 18mm plywood directly on the walls. By my measurements that should be a hair thicker than the trunking, so the trunking shouldn't be in the way. Might be worth having...

    Building a tool wall

Is there an easy way to get holes in the plywood sheet to line up with the holes in the wall if attaching directly? I'm not fussed what it looks like (especially as it'll be largely covered), but being carless I expect I will be ordering it online without having the chance to see it first. So...

    Building a tool wall

Hi folks, It will probably not shock you to hear that I have a collection of homeless tools and clamps which migrate between my workbench, router table and various bits of floor, to make room for whatever I'm trying to do at any given moment. However, above the router table and workbench is...

    Fixing a marking gauge

    OK, thanks!

    Fixing a marking gauge

Hmm, those look like they have threads on the outside that would be just as likely to slip again. That's why I was wondering if some sort of glue might be more secure.

    Fixing a marking gauge

I'm not sure how well I can show the problem with photos. Do those below help? I think that currently the wood is tapped directly, rather than having an insert. I assume that the screw is just slipping over the wood.

    Fixing a marking gauge

Hi folks, I have a malfunctioning marking gauge. If I remove the sliding piece, then I can screw the thumb screw all the way in, and all seems to be fine. However, when it is assembled, if I try to tighten the thumb screw then it just slips, and will spin forever and never tighten. I was...

    En/decoding box

Finally got this finished! It translates between braille, morse code, semaphore and binary. Probably the hardest and most time consuming part was just getting all the wood planed flat and square. Here's the top with the hole layout punched. 116 7mm holes for the LEDs and buttons on the top...

    Box bottoms

    Nice idea, thanks!

    Box bottoms

The rebate set came with a myriad of washers, spacers and extenders, and no instructions. I assembled it in a way that made sense to me, and I guess it was good enough, as the routing then proceeded without problem. I tried rounding the corners of the bottom to fit inside the routed area...

    Box bottoms

But if it isn't then I might get a step. Still, it's probably easier to assume that it is, and if I get a small step then deal with it later. Except I plan to glue the sides together first, to make it easy to get everything at the same depth, so I wouldn't be able to start the cut if I used...

    Box bottoms

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think that despite your assurances, I would feel more comfortable rebating the glued box than trying to do stopped grooves, and it seems likely to be strong enough, so I think I'll go ahead and order the Axminster variable rebate set. One quick follow-up...

    Box bottoms

That's a fair point, but of course would leave the ugly plywood edge showing. I suppose the upside would be that it distracts from the gaps in the dovetails! But of course, the wider the rebate, the closer it approximates this. I do actually already have an 11.1mm guided rebater, but that...

    Box bottoms

Hey folks, I've been working on a project for which I didn't know what height I would need, so I made it oversize and cut the bottom off. This has left me with this: The dovetails are far from perfect, but they'll certainly hold the sides together - in fact, I was surprised at how well they...

    Box decorations

Hi all, I often see small boxes with flat metal decorations on; often something like an elephant, as in this picture: Does anyone know if there's a standard term for these please? I've been looking to see if I can buy some to experiment with putting on boxes, but the search terms I can think...

    High grit sanding disk assortment

Generally I'm a fan of sanding as little as I can get away with (and far less than I ought to), but in this case I was trying to do some pyrography on something, and the pen was finding all sorts of bumps and valleys. Perhaps I just hadn't been patient enough at 180, but either way going to...
