    Spiral Christmas tree

I came across a video on youtube of someone making a spiral Christmas tree: and thought I'd give it a go. Presumably the author doesn't have a lathe, as they use a bandsaw to make the initial spiral. I also don't have a lathe, but didn't fancy trying their bandsaw technique either, so I...

    Mini bench

Got some ash, and cut/planed a piece to wrap around the rear vice jaw: Then attached front and rear jaw liners. It wasn't until I was here, planing the tops flush with the bench top, that I realised that a 2cm thick rear liner was probably overkill, given that although it was wider than the...

    Holes in bandsaw inserts

Thanks all! I think I'll give the drill press a rest, and just leave them all solid, then :-)

    Holes in bandsaw inserts

Hi folks, My bandsaw insert is starting to look a little chewed up, so I though I ought to do something about it before it's too late. And as I sometimes have small pieces fall down the gap, I thought I would try to make something closer to a zero clearance insert. I planed some 6mm ply down...

    Mini bench

Progress trundles slowly along. Legs shaped and glued, along with a block to lower the vise jaws below the top. The legs are also a little wider than I'd planned; it seemed silly trim them down for no benefit, but the front right one needed a notch cut out for the vice to fit into, to allow the...

    Mini bench

I hoped that starting a public project thread would encourage me to make faster progress, but sadly it doesn't seem to have turned out that way. Still, I'm getting there now, as evidenced by the shavings bin. How does so little wood end up taking up so much space?! The two halves now planed...

    Mini bench

Hmm, I don't have any, but I could get some. That's definitely worth considering, thanks! Ah, I see. I suspect that clamps on stretchers at the ends would interfere with the vice, but I'll see if I can mock it up and experiment once the bench top is done. Thanks Wend

    Mini bench

Hmm. I wonder if drilling a hole up from the bottom of the leg, and putting a dowel into it, would make them stronger. Although in that case the dowel would have a different grain direction to the leg (as the leg wants to have the same grain direction as the top), so maybe that wouldn't be wise...

    Mini bench

Yep. A lot of mini benches I've seen online have legs something like this, which allow you to clamp in the same area: but I couldn't see how to make that work well with my vice and dimensions. I'm not sure if I need to worry about my legs racking, but I figure that I can always screw a bit of...

    Mini bench

I've had ambitions to make a mini workbench for some time now, to allow me to have work higher up, have a bench with dog holes, and have a vice at 90 degrees to the vice on my bench. I got a vice some time ago, and it and some maple and poplar have been lying around getting in the way for...

    Keyless chuck loosening in reverse

Presumably a keyless chuck with a locking ring (like https://www.amazon.co.uk/Keyless-2-20UNF-Self-tighten-Multiple-Purposes/dp/B088X1JKKL) would work?

    Sliding Mitre Gauge different slides

Looking more closely at how they're constructed, I don't think I'd know how to do it properly. I'd need to attach the main body in such a way that it can rotate freely without slop, attach the latching part similarly (at the right distance and in line), and provide a threaded hole for the...

    Sliding Mitre Gauge different slides

A quick search suggests guide bars also only come in 19mm widths. Did you mean I could make my own out of wood? I suppose that's an option, but I'm not sure I rate my chances of managing to make something the right size, adjustable, and attached squarely to the mitre gauge.

    Sliding Mitre Gauge different slides

I've just been struggling with this same problem. Both my Record BS300 and my Record sander have T slots which are 14mm wide at the bottom and 9mm wide at the top. They come with mitre gauges that have a T on the bottom that's 12.8mm at the bottom, and 8.8mm at the top, and fit quite sloppily...

    3M 7500 spare parts (7582 inhalation valve)

Hi folks, I just bought some new filters for my 7500 mask, but when I went to fit them I noticed that there was a rubber disk on the inside of one side but not the other. I did a bit of searching, and it looks like I have somehow lost one of the 7582 inhalation filters. I wasn't expecting this...

    Tensegrity table

I finally got around to making a top (just more 2x4, cut into strips and laminated together), sanding, staining and finishing this in November. Pretty happy with the final result, and more importantly, so is the wife! I glued some cubes of wood to the underside of the top, and screwed some...

    Spotting drills

I believe it is. I think actually "Centre" was the wrong word, and it should should have been "Spot", but never mind. I forget the difference now, but I looked into it back when I made the original post and ordered the bit. It's a 5mm 120 Degree Uncoated HSS NC Spot Drill - D2307 Series (YG-1)...

    Spotting drills

I finally got back to this. I got one side of a piece of softwood, ash and beech as flat as I could, gathered my 5mm drill bits and made some test holes. All done with the wood against the fence of a Bosch PBD40. Results are below, in case it helps anyone - although not particularly...

    Tongue drums

Hi folks, Something that's on my to-make list, hopefully next year, is a tongue drum. I've been doing some research, trying to put together a plan for how to make it, and what experiments I need to do, but there's something that is confusing me: It looks like most people just build them as a...

    Tensegrity table

If you imagine it with only the central chain, then the top piece is hanging from the arm of the bottom piece. But it is very unstable: If you push one corner down, then the opposite corner will rise. The corner chains stop the opposite corners from rising, and hence stop the original corners...
